Default WFM vs FM Mode?

Why would the same signal (around 900 Mhz) received on one radio, an AOR
AR8600, be heard best in WFM while FM seems to be the mode of choice on an
ICOM 8500? The two radios react almost exactly opposite of each other,
clear reception on AOR using WFM and noisy, no signal FM. No ICOM signal
received using WFM and distorted but intelligible FM. Same antenna, an AOR
MA500 sitting on an indoors windowsill.

I *think* the AR8600 uses 150kHz and 25kHz bandwidths respectively for what
AOR terms WFM and NFM while the ICOM is 150kHz for WFM and 12kHz for FM
"normal". If (and believe me this is a big if) I understand Frequency
Modulation in general correctly I can see why ICOM FM narrow might differ
from AOR NFM but not the apparently identical WFMs.

Thanx,
Bob
