I use either new alkaline or freshly recharged NiMH
AA cells and have tried Groan's application on several
different PC's also launched from the hard drive and off of a diskette.

After the ERROR message and a loss of everything in the R-2
Shutting down the PC and powering it back up reloading the
application and a fresh file from a 3.5 "diskette it will eventually load up
into the R-2
It's similar with the other application, but the BIG difference is NO LOSS
of existing memory contents of the R-2., when it fails to load up a file!

It seems to happen after opening a file into ether application form a
diskette,
then modifying the file, with a R-2 loader application, then trying to
transfer this new file to the R-2.

I've had similar problems with the ICOM IC R-2
When trying to load a file with free ware into the R-2, it gives a
message,
"ERROR" thatr comes up on the R-2's display. Then after turing the
power off and
ofback on "CLEAR" shows up on the display and every thing in memory is
dumped.

I try to use the application that came with the computer cable,
it will set the "CLONE" mode for the file transfer automatically in the
R-2 and if the file transfer crashes
the memory contents in the R-2 are not lost....

Jim,

I don't know which software you are using for the ICOM IC-R2.
My experience is that a cloning operation will fail if
the radio's batteries are weak. This is especially true for the ICOM
and Yaesu portables which are powered by 2 AA cells.

Hi Jim,

I wrote tk2 software for the ICOM IC-R2 and you're
more than welcome to use it. tk2 is free, open source
software.

I use tk2 on Linux, though tk2 works on Linux, MacOS X, and
Windows, too.

You can use tk2 to read the image from your radio and save
it in a file before you write anything to the radio. It
requires a "2-way" level shifter cable, e.g. the stock
ICOM OPC-478,the Purple Computing cable, RT Systems
cable, etc.

I don't warrant tk2, but it won't cost you anything and
it's available from http://parnass.com

I used to work for Radio shack . Had they not let me go I would have left.
Most of the associates there don't know squat about scanners. Im sure there
are people there that do know about the scanners they offer through Radio
shack. If you're getting the scanner for yourself I encourage you to seek
out yahoogroups related to the scanner you own. and groups related to
scanning in your area. or area's of interest. DON'T trust someone else to
program the radio for you. This is part of the fun. When I got my first trunk
tracker..(bearcat 245xlt) I found the freqs for my area. Learned how to
program them in my radio. then learned how to find talkgroups.. .If you
need a base station scanner that will do both trunking and conventional at
the same time. do not get a pro 2052.. I dont know of a base unit that will
follow trunked and conventional systems at the same time. It is experience
that the pro 9 5portable will follow both trunked and conventional at the
same time..I know this for a fact as I was asked to program one as a demo.
and it worked fine. trouble was getting the owner to leave the thing on all
the time to "show it off". Hope this helps. as for the radio shack motto. it
should be " I didn't know that "

Steve;
The Uniden BC 780 , BC 785 and BC 796 will do trunk tracking and
conventional at
the same time. The Radio Shack/GRE PRO 2067 and PRO 2053 will also.

The PRO 2052 (Uniden's BC 895 too) may be able to trunk track and do
conventional
together UNDER THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE CONTROL also your
computer must be dedicated to this application. And or have the RAM to
run the scanner control application in the background! While doing other
tasks!

In article , harryc56
lid says...
I've used this service recently. It worked no problem when I bought the
scanner. I lost the stored Freqs in a 'user mishap' associated with 'Win95'
recently. I went back to RS to ask them to re-program it. They flat refused.
In fact, the guy behind the counter stated "I work on commision and don't
have time for this". Mind you, it took all of one minute to upload the Freqs
to the scanner on the first go-around, and I actually was buying another
antenna at the time. I finally convinced the store manager to give me a
printout of a local EDACS trunk I was after. In his defense, he stated that
"we get too many requests for re-programs..I'd rather show you how to
program the scanner than to have you come back time and time again for
re-programs". I told him 'I know how to program the thing, I just wanted
the Freqs'. So, for whatever it is worth, don't be surprised if you get this
same treatment. I can tell you that I am less apt to return to this
particular store in the future.

Harry, I couldn't agree with you more. If I bought it from Store #123,
and I needed to get it reprogrammed, and I took it back to that same
store, I would expect them to take the minute or two required to do the
reprogram. That said, I would also take into account how busy they were
at the time -- such as, not taking it in while they're swamped with
Christmas shoppers. And if I were doing the programming, I would try to
have a list handy to accompany the radio to show what frequencies were
put into what channels AND what those frequencies were for (city fire,
police, sherrif, cable company, Taco Bell, or whatever).

But if the store were to take the snotty attitude that you described,
and if I made sure I wasn't hitting them up for the service when they
had customers waiting, I'd explain to them how they just lost a
customer, take my radio and never return. I'd also pick up the
manager's business card and drop a note about the situation to the store
manager with a CC to the regional manager.
