Small rugged SW for long distance bike tour - Sony SW-100 or SW07

The smallest and best portable shortwave radios ever made:

The Sony ICF SW-100 is very good but needs the AN-LP1 antenna to perform
well.

Waters & Stanton ships to the US. My orders have been received in as little
as 1 week.
http://www.wsplc.com/acatalog/Sony_P...Receivers.html (no active
antenna)
http://www.ogormans.co.uk/shortwav1.htm#SONY ICF-SW100 (no active antenna)
http://www.unitedbuy.com/icfsw100s.html (includes active antenna AN-LP1)

The SW-07 is sweet and includes the automatic AN-LP2 active antenna.

http://www.unitedbuy.com/icfsw07.html

Except for Waters & Stanton I would call these places to confirm item is in
stock.

Both of these radios are very desireable and have a high resale value.

thanks

I like the folding aspect of the Sony above!

Seems to me that a folding unit might be better on a
bicycle as it would pack better

Having both of those (sw-07 sw-100) I wouldn't consider either one "rugged"
by any means.
It wouldn't take much of a drop to rip the folding lid and wires right off
of them...

I currently own both and they are certainly more rugged than any cheap bulky
Degan/Kaito/Redsun chinese garbage.

Go to a Walgreen's store in your area and see what they have in the way
of a small AM/FM/Shortwave radio.I am guessing you want something
inexpensive and if it gets dropped or wet,you won't be out much
money.Happy Biycling.

Of all the units mentioned is this the only one that
has digital tuning?

If your seriously considering the SW-100E (E=European version), also
consider the Sony AN-LP1 antenna. This antenna was included with the now
discontinued SW-100S (S=System -N.A. version).

Without the AN-LP1/2 antenna, reception off the whip of either radio will be
compromised but still very usable.

The SW-07 (includes AN-LP2 antenna) and the SW-100 are both digital tuning
and both have a synch detector.

I personally like the ergonomics of the SW-100 but the SW07 automatically
tunes the AN-LP2 (included). The AN-LP1 has a dial for band switching.

The SW-100's case is more rugged than the SW-07. But with either radio, or
any radio for that matter, I would treat them with care.

Performance of these two radios with the AN-LP1/2 antenna are virtually
identical. The performance edge is given to the SW-100 when comparing both
radios off the whip. The SW-07 has more memory and also has a station
memory ROM chip that can be updated annually. The SW-100 has 100 memories.

Yahoo groups has a group for each of these radios with lots of good info.

www.walgreens.com (Electronics,Radios) If you are going to be
tuning a radio while riding a bicycle, unless you rig a good neckstrap to
the radio, chances are you will drop the radio on the road and it's a
goner.I don't know about the Walgreen's stores in your area, but the
Walgreen's stores in my area almost always has some electronic thingys
on sale and if they have any AM/FM/Shortwave radios on sale, you can buy
one for about one third to about one half price off of the regular store
price.
