Portable IBOC/HD Radio May Be on Its Way

Before I read this article, I wasn't sold on the feasibility of HD. Most people (myself included) don't want to spend $200+ on a big radio just to hear HD radio when there's so much regular radio to enjoy without having to buy expensive new equipment. But with this new chip, HD will be available on smaller and less expensive radios, so it definitely makes HD look more possible than before. But even with these lower priced HD radios on the horizon, I still don't think HD will ever be heard by 10% of radio listeners. There's still two enormous barriers: millions of radios already sold that can never get HD, and most broadcasters simply don't have the extra money to invest in iffy HD equipment. Without the new chip, though, HD would have been dead in the water. Now it has a chance. Portable/hand-held DAB receivers in the UK are priced $100 - $200. If portable HD happens, it will be too expensive, plus consumers are not interested in HD Radio: http://www.google.com/trends?q=%22hd...o=all&date=all http://www.alexaholic.com/ibiquity.c...om+xmradio.com |
