90% savings in power eliminates the only obstacle to portable HD devices,
and the integrated chip makes very small HD devices practical.

90% savings over the power hogs that have been the table top HD radios
so far means that the HD portable will still suck more power than a
similar analog radio.

But less than an iPod, which is the benchmark here.

Maybe it is your bench mark. Most people will compare it to an analog
radio.

Before I read this article, I wasn't sold on the feasibility of HD. Most
people (myself included) don't want to spend $200+ on a big radio just
to hear HD radio when there's so much regular radio to enjoy without
having to buy expensive new equipment. But with this new chip, HD will
be available on smaller and less expensive radios, so it definitely
makes HD look more possible than before.

But even with these lower priced HD radios on the horizon, I still don't
think HD will ever be heard by 10% of radio listeners. There's still two
enormous barriers: millions of radios already sold that can never get
HD, and most broadcasters simply don't have the extra money to invest in
iffy HD equipment.

Without the new chip, though, HD would have been dead in the water. Now
it has a chance.

Portable/hand-held DAB receivers in the UK are priced $100 - $200. If
portable HD happens, it will be too expensive, plus consumers are not
interested in HD Radio:
