If a HD portable radio is supposed to replace an analog radio why would you compare it to an Ipod? You don't get the challenges faced by radio. The issue is making radio relevant in the coming years, during a period where already anything that is not digital is no longer cool unless you are about 60 or so. HD radios do not replace analog radios, pragmatically, because the analog portables are not being used. AM radio is not relevant to nearly anyone under 45... because it sounds bad and is analog. If nobody is listening, you can not replace anything... you are starting over in the under-45 demos. FM radio is challenged to keep relevant in the younger (12-24 in current Arbitron measurement) demographic groups, and a significant issue is being perceived as being a digital medium. HD radios do not replace anything. They become useful additions to the entertainment options, where the analog radio was not perceived that way. So, the standard against which audio, battery life, coolness and relevance will be measured is, presently, the iPod. How many kids do you see buying portable AM radios, huh? Many are being sold. I don't know what the age group is buying them. -- Telamon Ventura, California |
