I received email from Jackie 16th May advising me that the RP3100 would be basically the same cosmetically and performance wise as the RP3000 except that the RP3100 will not have the Synchronous Detector. Jackie also advised that the RP3100 is scheduled to be released in July 2007 and the RP300 later this year. So the 3100 doesn't have synch detection and it only uses an adjustable bfo for ssb. So far it seems to be a slightly improved 2100 and I'm not seeing what all the excitement is about.
