There is definitely a change in bit-rate. However, that is totally
different from the sample-rate. Totally.

BIT-rate and SAMPLE-rate are two completely different things.

In linear PCM audio:

BIT-rate = SAMPLE-rate X bit-resolution X number of channels

Stereo has two channels. Mono has one channel.

Verizon here RHF. I wouldn't have gotten a cell phone but I got this
new job over at Harris. (And just the keep this post legal, Harris
makes shortwave radios. Heheh.) So I'm working in Rochester, NY and
Wife is in Ma so I had to get a cell phone to keep in communication.
Hey, don't cell phones use tiny waves. I guess this stuff should
really be posted to rec.radio.tinywave, but that keeps bouncing.
Anyway, so there ya go, I like Verizon just fine. A really nice
polite bunch of peeps over there and very helpful if you get the
chance to call them. I give em a two thumbs up.
