At present it looks as though Hurricane Dean will make a direct hit on Jamaica sometime on Sunday. FLASH: Could be unprecedented event for Jamaica; direct hit with 150 MPH sustained winds [topping Hurricane Gilbert's 135 MPH winds [Sept. 1988] and Charlie's 100 MPH winds in 1951]... Population of Jamaica is nearly 3 million people; and is 49th most densely-populated country in world... (Via Drudge) dxAce Michigan USA This is close to the ultimate hurricane nightmare scenario. We've already had New Orleans wiped out. Jamaican buildings are flimsy and are poorly suited to withstand a 150 mph storm. Some Jamaicans live in shanties. In my mind the ultimate worst case would be a Cat 5 on top of Havana, where all the buildings are rickety and crumbling away as it is. The Cubans wouldn't get everybody out in time, and the city would likely be completely wiped off the face of the earth. Something similar may happen to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Dean is headed for Cancun and Northern Mexico, two other places where buildings are weak. |
