Default The Circle of Zap ! - Lightning - How Close Is Close ?

The Circle of Zap ! - Lightning - How Close Is Close ?
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shortw.../message/14342
.
First you and your Family were not Home so no people was Hurt.
.
Considering a Direct Hit - Lightning Hitting Your House;
-or- Your Antenna Ground System;
-or- Your Car while it was parked inside the Garage.
- - - To Say The Least You Have Been ZAPPED
and the Worst could be that the House and Everything
is a Total Loss. Yes - It was Over before you knew it happen.
.
Next consider a Near Hit within 300 Yards of Your House. The
EMF was so great it fried many of your household electronic
appliances, Microwave, Toothbrush, Telephones, TVs, PC, and
many of the Light Bulbs were gone too; not to mention the
Washer & Dryer; Refregerator; Hot Water Heater and the AC Unit.
-Now- If before you left the house you disconnected the Antenna
from the Radios; and unplugged the Radios from the AC Power;
Shorted Out the Antenna Inputs of the Radios and put the Radios
in a Strong Metal Box . . . The Good News is that your Radios
are OK - Whoopie ! - Now Explain that to your Wife )
.
Then consider a Not-So-Near-Hit about a Mile Away from Your
House. The EMF was not-so-great; and some items in your
house did get Zaps. The DVD doesn't DVD anymore and the
Fish in the Fish Tank are dead because the Air Pump stopped.
-But Again- The Good News is that your Radios are OK
- Now Explain that to your Kids who want to have a Funeral
for the Fish :-(
.
Finally consider a distant Hit of Lightning about 3-5 Miles
away, Your House is Safe and you Radios were not harmed.
The Gizmo Box gizzed; The Neon Bulb glowed;
The Diodes dioded; and the Bleed Resister bled.
.
Most of these things are designed for 'low-level-protection'
and are simply not Lightning Protectors. The do a reasonable
job of getting rid of Static and minor EMF problems from
distant events. But a Very Near of Direct Hit NO [.]
.
With out going through a lot of work and a lot of money
Protecting your House and your Radios from Lightning is
not easy. However there are somethings that you can do
to Protect your Radios and in the process Protect Your
House and Family.
.
# 1 - Disconnected the Antennas and feed-in-lines outside
and away from the House when you are not using the Radios;
or when a T&L Storm is in the local area. This should be
a designed-in feature of your Antenna Grounding System.
.
# 2 - Unplugged the Radios from the AC Power when
not in use or when a T&L Storm is in the local area.
.
# 3 - Shorted Out the Antenna Inputs of the Radios when
not in use or when a T&L Storm is in the local area.
.
# 4 - Put the Radios in a Strong Metal Box; this is way
too much; but if it makes you feel good . . .
.

EMF from a "close" lightning hit/pass got my Linksys WRTP54G wireless router
last week.

Remember the old "box fans", lightning anyplace close (same block) would
burn them out.

Burr - The old 20" Box Fans were/are one of the most
Efficient Electric Fans around for Power Usage and
the Amount of Air Moved. Plus their Price usually
makes them the best deal in portable Room Fans. ~ RHF
