Junius, More likely this would be properly described as the Eton E1 AM/FM Shortwave Radio -sans- {without} circuitry for the 'Optional' XM Satellite Receiver Module http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...able/0101.html Please Note - That I have the Eton E1XM Radio with the 'Optional' XM Satellite Receiver Module : Which I never use and while the Eton E1 AM/FM Shortwave Radio is a GREAT 'portable' Radio -imho- XM Satellite Radio does not make-it or break-it -and- 'sans' {without} XM Satellite Radio the Eton E1 Radio at a new lower Price Point is now clearly Exportable and 'Sellable' Around the World. The Eton E1 AM/FM Shortwave Radio - Something Good Just Got Better - - - At A New Lower Price. ![]() http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...able/0101.html this is 'rhf' and that's the way i hear it ~ RHF |

I've heard complaints that this doesn't have a good AM antenna built in.
What's the real story with that? Are people saying that the AM reception is poor with the whip? It's got a built in antenna for AM. What's the real story with that? The real story is that it uses the whip antenna rather than a wound ferrite for AM reception. Â*Have you? The whip antenna is not a good antenna for AM. It picks up a lot of noise, is not very directional and not very sensitive. Signals easily picked up with other radios are buried in the noise on the E1. A Sony 7600g is much better on AM. |

My 1995 Jeep GCL's AM/FM Radio only uses a Whip Antenna -HEY- Wait a minute just about every Car and Truck on the Road uses 'only' a Whip Antenna -and- They all generally get better AM & FM Radio reception then most Home Radios with an AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna. FWIW - The Grundig Satellit 800-M only has a 4" AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna. - - - The Ferrite Rod Antenna is the better Bi-Directional Antenna. Oops - You only get this 'optimum' Signal Peaking and Nulling result when you "Rotate" the Radio with the Ferrite Rod Antenna built into it for the best signal. The Eton E1 Radio has a 40" Whip Antenna plus a "DX" Switch {RF Pre-Amp} which gives a 10~15 dB Signal Boost. - - - The Whip Antenna is the better Omni-Directional AM/MW Antenna. well i'll be whipped -but- never beaten by a ferrite rod - iane ~ RHF Improving AM/MW Radio Reception of the Eton E1 Radio + Add an AM Loop Antenna http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ETON-E...o/message/5305 http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...bb3961114bd069 |
