Default Will Performance Royalties Kill HD Radio?

"The Record Industry's Nuclear Option"

"For that matter, will terrestrial radio be able to keep broadcasting
music if the record industry gets its way and imposes further
performance taxes on over-the-air stations? Not that HD radio matters
with so few stations offering programming and so few sets being sold,
but you can kiss that pipe dream goodbye as well."

"HD Radio - Wherefore Art Thou?"

"Just contemplate that thought for a second before moving on, because
there's something around the corner that may cripple HD Radio far
worse than lackluster consumer interest, or inability to get the
product on store shelves. Second's up. If the push to make broadcast
radio pay the same exorbitant fees for performance royalties that
internet radio is facing wins, every side-channel that's in this rush
to HD will be included in the invoice. How's that for an HD Radio
killer?"

"House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Broadcast Performance Right - No
Breaks for the Broadcasters" July 31, 2007

"Congressman Howard Berman chairs the subcommittee, and he opened the
hearing with a summary of the issues - indicating that he expected
that the committee would move legislation this year to impose a
performance royalty on broadcasters."

Answering the question "What killed IBOC?" will perplex us for many
years. Coming up with an answer is like determining "the" cause of
death of a person who was shot in the head, ingested deadly poison,
was struck by a car, jumped off a cliff and was beheaded all at a
single instant. Which cause is "the" cause of death? I don't know, but
maybe it'd be easier to talk about the causes of death.

What's interesting, is that I read that HD Internet streaming is
having to pay the royalty fees, and I can no longer stream from
clearchannelmusic.com/hdrado and audiographics.com/agd/080207-1.htm -
like they have been disabled.
