After the Boxing Day Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the Emmis hip hop station in NYC, WQHT, had a parody of "We are the world" concerning the Tsunami victims which had all of the good taste of a Don Imus or Howard Stern with none of the wit. Some protest by people like a Chinese-American city council member caused some of the advertisers to leave the morning zoo lineup. How long they left I don't know. H.L. Mencken once said that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people and I should guess this goes at least triple for the audience of morning zoo-type programs. Another problem that happened with this station was that its landlord, the Carpenters' Union, tried to evict them because of gun play involving hip hop musicians, their "possies" and their rivals. |
