This may be a dumb-assed question to ask but why are there so many fundamentalist Christian broadcasts in English on shortwave? Many good (and serious) answers else-thread. I'll add that Christianity is a proselytizing religion, so there is a moral imperative in many expressions of fundamentalist Christianity to Go Forth And Spread The Word. Since Islam is also a proselytizing religion, we should expect a fair amount of similar sorts of shows. In my limited experience, this seems to be the case. If you hunt around different parts of the world you can pick up more than a few similar Islamic stations, mostly out of North and East Africa, and the Middle East. I am, of course, assuming that these stations provide the same purpose as their Christian counterparts in spreading The Word. Which might be untrue, since I don't understand Arabic. The French stations out of North and West Africa certainly covered much the same ground with respect to the One True Religion. Many of the strongest Christian stations I pick up are in North America or English-speaking areas of the northern hemisphere; so easier to pick up by folks living where those commonly propagate. So, there might be some self-selecting going on since it is so easy for most of us to hear these guys. There might be a little bit of preaching to the converted going on, maybe. -- clvrmnky Direct replies to this address will be blacklisted. Replace "spamtrap" with my name to contact me directly. |
