Default This CCrane radio any good? + other questions

I am starting to feel embarrassed with all these questions I have been
asking. While The Passport To World Band Radio has a wealth of
information in it as far as they reviews, I get excited about a
certain one as I am reading the PROS. The comes the CONS. After that,
the verdict. I am so lost. The CONS seem to be more numerous on all
the radios.

I was thinking of getting the Sony ICF-SW7600GR,http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-SW760...ver-Reception/...

but then I read the cons and they made a big deal of no tuning knob. I
still really like it for the most part.

Another one I am very interested in is the C Crane C CSW
(http://www.amazon.com/Crane-CSW-Cloc...000VVJRDE/ref=....
). Because pulling in distant AM stations would be a great plus for
me, I have been thinking about this for the last few days. But, to me,
it looks like the Eton S350 Deluxe DLB AM/FM Shortwave Radio *http://www..amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._1?pf_rd_p=250...

or the Grundig S350http://www.amazon.com/Grundig-S350-Deluxe-Shortwave-Radio/dp/B000Q5AP...

Lastly, I have been looking for this as well: *Kaito PLL Synthesized
Dual Conversion AM/FM Shortwave Radio (but it lacks a keypad)http://www.amazon.com/Kaito-Synthesi...twave-KA2100/d...

Here are a few features I would like and I am sure I am missing some
that should be included:

1. Capable of picking up distant AM signal. Would the dual ferrite
antenna be preferable to a single inside antenna? This would be a
strong plus for me and at the same time, not pick up other signals
that might interfere with what I am listening to.
2. digital readout.
3. Keypad
4. Tuning knob
5. SSB.
6. get full SW spectrum, continuous, not in three band or whatever, or
is that just the way it comes?
7. Various adjustment knobs that lets you fine tooth the signals.
8. PLL Synthesized (to lock in stations and avoid drift. I hope that
is what it is for)
9.Dual conversion (I have no idea what that is, but it sounds good

Could someone who has some extra time compare the models I have listed
above and see which might be closest to meeting my needs. I would like
to still keep it portable and not be too bid of a monster.

Thanks, friends,
Haci

Maybe by this time, next year, I will be asking more interesting
questions...I hope.

Default WHY - Use the Sony AN-1 and AN-12 LW/MW/SW Wide Range Active Antenna

- curious Roy,
- why was the AN-1 active whip discontinued?
-
- It's the one I bought with my 2010 back in the day,
- it gave good all around performance
- plus lots of station QSLs when I used to collect them.
-
- Sony AN-1 in conjunction with a Grove TUN-3,
- a very good, yet obsolete team these days.

WHY - Use the Sony AN-1 and AN-12 LW/MW/SW
Wide Range Active Antenna

BB,

Sony AN-1 Active LW/MW/SW Antenna
http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/sw_ant/2206.html

The Sony AN-1 Active Antenna Coverage :
+ Longwave Frequencies = 150 to 500 kHz
+ Medium Wave {AM BCB} = 500 to 1700 kHz
+ Shortwave Bands {HF} = 1.8 to 30 MHz

IMHO - The Sony AN-12 Active Antenna would appear to be
a re-make {up-grade ?} of the Sony AN-1 Active Antenna.

-from- eBay Seller : JoyNetCafe

My 'guess' would be an 'old' Design based on 'old' Parts
and time came to update the Design because of the lack
of old Parts to use newer Parts and -extend- the Product's
Life. So the old' AN-1 became the new AN-12

Yes - That's AN 1 & 2 {Punch} !

Potentially the 'new' Sony AN-12 Active Antenna should be
'better' then the older Sony AN-1 Active Antenna : Due to
the newer 'better' Parts and 'improved' Design.

=IF= Only someone could do a Side-by-Side between the
old' Sony AN-1 Active Antenna; and the 'new' Sony AN-12
Active Antenna : Then We Would All Know.

WHY - Use the Sony AN-1 -or- AN-12 Active Antenna ?

1 - It is Broad-Banded LW/MW/SW and does not have
to be Tuned like the Sony AN-LP1 Shortwave "Only"
Active Antenna with it's Tuning Band Steps.

2.a - It is designed to be mounted "OutSide" the House
and Up-in-the-Air for a better 'cleaner' Signal and Less
Noise then the Sony AN-LP1 Shortwave Active Antenna
that is located in-side-the-House.
+ Works well for a Limited Space OutSide Antenna.
In-the-Yard or On-the-Roof.
+ Works well as a [Hidden] "Stealth" Antenna In-the-Attic.

2.b - It can be both Located and Grounded to achieve a
better 'cleaner' Signal and Less Noise then the Sony
AN-LP1 Shortwave Active Antenna that is limited to
being located in-side-the-House.

3 - The Antenna Element can be Modified to better meet
your specific Shortwave Radio Listening (SWL) Needs.
-ps- It is a Fun Active Antenna to Experiment with . . .

MODIFYING - The Sony AN-1 -or- AN-12 Active Antenna :
I have try and used many Different Hook-Ups of the Sony
AN-1 Active Antenna over the Years. I have used the
'older' Sony AN-1 Active Antenna in many ways with good
results for a small Active E-Probe Antenna.

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Single Turn Loop
Terminated Antenna Element -or- Using a Slinky Jr
on a Hula Hoop for the Antenna Element.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...2f706aa82a0538
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...636b8c25a29ad4

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a 104 Inch CB Whip
Antenna Element mounted on a single 21 Foot piece
of free-standing Top Rail.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...be298d354f68f8
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...d05099dc0d45fb

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Ten Foot (10 Ft)
Tri-Band "BroomStick" Antenna without the Top-Hat.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...8cb2f7355aa732

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Pair of Ten Foot
Triangular Loops: one loop was positioned N-S and
the other was positioned E-W.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...103ac9571ec5a0

* Sony AN-1 Active Antenna with a Pair of Diamond
Loops made of Wire that are 24" on the Side.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...27cd40016de600

QUESTION - Has anyone else had the Problem of the 'old'
Sony AN-1 Antennas Dying after Two Years when mounted
In-the-Attic or On-the-Roof ? -or- Is this Simply the "Normal
Life Span" of the Sony AN-1 Active Antenna ?
