Hiya...
Can anyone offer any comments on this medium wave antenna ??? http://www.ccrane.com/am-antenna.asp I'm thinking of picking one up for MW DX'ing. I'd be using it along with my GE SR-III. I'd also take a crack at using it with the KA-1102 and PL-550. The SR-III already has a substaitial ferrite bar in it, but, as anyone that has used it knows, it is hightly directional and you have the spin the radio about at times. I'm wondering if the C Crane antenna would solve that problem and or enhance the DX'ing capabilities of the SR-III. -- Respectfully, Michael Location: New Jersey Primary Receiver: R-75 with full Kiwa mods Antennas: G5RV, 200ft "Frankenstein" roof wire Additional Radios: KA-1101,KA-1102,PL-550, KA-989, Info-Mate 837, GE-SR III Westinghouse H-104 (seven tube) Web Site: http://md_dxing.tripod.com |

Richard, Warsaw Hiya, Richard.... The "Frankenstein" roof wire that I have is very good as a shortwave DX'ing antenna, especially for the 25 to 16 meter bands, but it is not a very good MW antenna. It would seem that "Frankenstein" just isn't tuned for the lower frequencies. -- Respectfully, Michael Location: New Jersey Primary Receiver: R-75 with full Kiwa mods Antennas: G5RV, 200ft "Frankenstein" roof wire Additional Radios: KA-1101,KA-1102,PL-550, KA-989, Info-Mate 837, GE-SR III Westinghouse H-104 (seven tube) Web Site: http://md_dxing.tripod.com |

The "Frankenstein" roof wire that I have
is not a very good MW antenna. I can imagine. The signals are coming from everywhere and can't be seperated, you need to be able to turn your antenna to the side/back/up/down/around to null out stronger stations to hear weaker stations and a good tuning capacitor to cover the BCB. Then before you even move your loop, you can tune the Variable Cap to peak the station and then if needed, moved the loop slowly to the left or right to get rid of any unwantd signal. Nothing like it, nothing like dxing the BCB with a nice size loop that you are controlling right in front of you and then hearing the difference as you're doing it. :-) ~^Monitoring The Spectrum^~ Hammarlund HQ129X /Heathkit Q Multiplier Hammarlund HQ140X Multiple GE P-780's(GREAT BCB Radios) RCA Victor *Strato- World* RCA Victor RJC77W-K(Walnut Grain) 1942 Zenith Wave Magnet 6G 601M Cathedral/ Ross#2311/Rhapsody-MultiBand DX100/394/*SUPER*398/399/402 OMGS Transistor Eight/Realistic 12-1451 Henry Kloss Model One/Bell+HowellSW ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Alpha Delta DX Sloper 57ft. 500ft. 12AWG. I'm wondering if the C Crane antenna would solve that problem and or enhance the DX'ing capabilities of the SR-III. What you view as a problem with the SR3, many view as a blessing. The directionality of the antenna allows you to null out unwanted signals and pull in weaker signals that would otherwise not be listenable. Among DXers, directionality is a highly desireable feature. As for the CCrane antenna, it contains two 8-inch ferrite antennas which are just as directional as the antenna in the SR3. In my experience, it does very little for the SR3. You might be able to set it at a different angle than the SR3 and allow signals that would otherwise be nulled out to get through to the SR3, though you're likely to just end up with a jumbled mess of signals. You also have to tune the CCrane antenna, so you'd just be trading rotating the radio for rotating a dial on the control box (plus possibly having to rotate both the radio and the CCrane antenna). The CCrane antenna WILL make a big difference when used with the other radios you mentioned. They have much smaller ferrite antennas and will benefit greatly from the larger ferrite in the CCrane antenna. -- Jay |

Roger that. I've heard three stations on the same graveyard channel with my "Stupor Radio Three," as I like to call it. It's quite a good little radio. I want to build a marker generator for this thing. I wish I could make the dial alignment a little better - I've realigned it twice, but guess I'll have another go, one of these days. The SRIII also happens to be a very decent camp radio. I'm planning on a trip to the Boundary Waters, with a nice FM yagi, maybe 8 elements or so, to see if I can hear a little more Canadian FM than I'm used to. I've heard that all Canadians talk like "Ike" from South Park, and I want to see if that's true. Plus, I like Tim Horton's, now that they're owned by an American company (putatively, at least). So, I'm hoping to hear a Tim Horton's commercial. 73, Steve Lawrence KAØPMD Burnsville, Minnesota (NOTE: My email address has only one "dot." No question about the dial... I wish the SR-III was digital. IMO, that is the major draw back of the SR-III. Instead of the CCrane antenna, I may decide to buy the CC Radio Plus instead. Having a digital radio will probably be more of a boost to my medium wave DXing then getting another feritte bar for my SR-III that already has a nice big one in it. -- Respectfully, Michael Location: New Jersey Primary Receiver: R-75 with full Kiwa mods Antennas: G5RV, 200ft "Frankenstein" roof wire Additional Radios: KA-1101,KA-1102,PL-550, KA-989, Info-Mate 837, GE-SR III Westinghouse H-104 (seven tube) Web Site: http://md_dxing.tripod.com |

I'm pretty much in a Faraday cage and my only "window" to the radio world is a 4'x8' window to the South which doesn't open. I have a CCradio+ a couple feet from me and the CCrane AM Antenna up in the window (where the top and bottom come together and form a little ledge). The CCrane AM Antenna increases = EXTREMELY = the quantity and quality of stations, both daytime and nighttime. One of my friends has a CCradio and the AM Antenna in a wood frame house and the AM Antenna barely helps with his CCradio but has = DRASTIC = improvements when used with other AM radios he has. I don't begrudge the money I spent on the CCradioPlus at all; it was a nice addition and in my peculiar case, the CCrane antenna is a big help but I might could build a shelf up in the window and stand on a ladder to tune it and have the same reception with just the CCradio (grin). The only weak point I have seen with mine is that it does not "null" signals as well as a premium loop antenna. -- Stinger |

FO&A,
"Instead of the CCrane antenna, I may decide to buy the CC Radio Plus instead." The CCRadio and the CCRadioPlus both have a 200mm (8") AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna just like the GE Superadios. ~ RHF .. .. = = = "Michael" wrote in message = = = . net... "Stephen M.H.
