So, you check the batteries every couple days.

The transmitters have battery telegraphs. There is a bar graph on the
receiver. Lithium batteries die quick. You have to change the
batteries as soon as the bar graph starts to fall. Alkalines will give
you another couple hours.

You don't do wireless mics for live TV.

The upshot is that when a wireless mike using NiMH cells on live TV
goes south, it screws up your TV show. That's reasonably relevant, I
thought.

We go through several 5 gallon buckets of AAs a year.

What show is it, Dave? A local show or something that gets some
syndication or network exposure?

... I have to say, I have not had this problem. I usually see
the device
begin to slow or dim or whatever it would normally do. It
may be only
a half an hour 'til electron death, but it is not
instantaneous, and
that's plenty of time for anything I use.

The life of the battery is more or less fixed. That is, it's a
consistent drain, and so life of a given battery line from fully
charged is the same unit to unit. You can count on the life of the
battery being a more or less constant number of hours.

Keep track of the hours on a battery, replace it at 2/3's of life.

I used all wireless mics on all my live radio, TV, and stage
shows. Never a problem with mics due to battery life.

I did notice some wireless mics were intermittent, from time to
time. Traced that to a poor battery fit. Returned from Energizers to
Duracells or ProCells and the problem never returned.

Ever heard or read about wind up batteries? I think it was at
http://www.techchee.com
where I read about them a few weeks ago.

I do live network shows. If you watch TV you've seen shows I work on.

Sennheiser says Duracell/Procell isn't putting enough electrolyte in
their batteries lately and sometimes the paste compacts and makes
intermittent contact inside the battery.

I'll use Lithium for an actual 3 hour show, but for rehearsals, when
mics stay on stage for 4 or 5 hours sometimes, I prefer the alkalines,
so I don't have to interrupt an act in the middle of their rehearsal.
The less the truck sees of me the better.

Our pro stuff (Sennheiser and Shure) tells us the state of the
transmitter battery on the receiver front panel.

I'm posting from rec radio cb. Somehow, I don't think they
use CB radios at a transmitter station.

Would you use this for mobile CB, or what?

Since most CB walkie talkies take 8 alkaline or 10 Nicads, I
can easily imagine that. Would it be more useful to use a
mobile or base radio? I guess you are probably outdoors.
