Once the fruitcakes on the fringes start shooting at each other,
democracy in the US will cease to be...at least what little there is
left of it after the Patriot Act was brought in.

Rumour has it that the Act was composed and complete, ready to go, some
months before the Twin Towers.

Some parts of the Patriot Act were written by John Mitchell. They passed
a wish list, not a plan.

Careful, their Supreme Commander frequents this very newsgroup and will
get revenge by mentioning his alleged dad's appendage yet again. It's
been on his mind a lot these last few days. He's probably lonely.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "checks and balances"?

Do your homework, review the auto companies of the 1930s, before the
unions came into being. There was a very good reason why the unions were
needed, namely Capital's rampant abuse of Labor.

Unions have had their share of excesses, as has Big Business (witness
the current Great Recession, courtesy of Big Business greed). You NEED
checks and balances. If the Repubs get their way and make the unions
disappear, there will be no protection for labor, nothing, NOTHING to
balance runaway greed.

It's that simple -- unions, even with their imperfections, are needed to
balance the greed of Capital. Again, do your homework and find out about
all the abuses that took place before unions.

Finally, you complain about "those who will steal your money via
taxation". What are you saying? That you don't want taxes at all? That
you only want some taxes? How much is too much? I don't know about you,
but I -like- our libraries, paved roads, traffic lights, police and fire
departments, all paid for by taxes. I presume your disability benefits
are helpful to you. You can be against taxes, but make sure you don't
shoot yourself in the foot.

Nah, it was the likes of Barney (give it to me in the ass) Frank.

Not true. It was actually a handful of people at a handful of
institutions making greedy (and stupid) decisions. 2 acts of Congress,
criminal behavior by Moody's and S&P and some below the radar "waivers"
created a derivatives bubble. Barney Frank just provided the bubble
material. Phil Gramm, Alan Greenspan, Clinton, Geightner, etc. all went
crazy reversing the laws Roosevelt put in place. This is what happens
when business is deregulated.

These people crashed the economy on purpose so they could destroy the
New Deal.

What do you mean "turn down more pre-existing
conditions"? Are you saying people with chronic conditions are denied
coverage? That is not my understanding. Medicare is like group health
insurance; they have to cover you.

Again, from Wkipedia:

"The Commonwealth Fund, in its annual survey, "Mirror, Mirror on the
Wall", compares the performance of the health care systems in
Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the
U.S. Its 2007 study found that, although the U.S. system is the most
expensive, it consistently under-performs compared to the other
countries.[15] One difference between the U.S. and the other countries
in the study is that the U.S. is the only country without universal
health insurance coverage.

The Commonwealth Fund completed its thirteenth annual health policy
survey in 2010.[16] A study of the survey "found significant
differences in access, cost burdens, and problems with health
insurance that are associated with insurance design".[16] Of the
countries surveyed, the results indicated that people in the United
States had more out-of-pocket expenses, more disputes with insurance
companies than other countries, and more insurance payments denied;
paperwork was also higher although Germany had similarly high levels
of paperwork.[16]"

I presume that this information is available in more detail, and I'll
keep looking.

This was very well known for many years . It is exactly what the bio-
medical and insurance mafia has fought against for a very long time .
