It's my understanding that the Chinese are the major holders of our
debt and that if they really did dump 97%(!) of them, we would be in
a much worse financial fix than we are already in.



I should have written Treasury _bills_ instead of bonds. They have
indeed dumped 97% of the bills -- and they have now started to
reduce their holdings of the bonds as well:
