Dear Parker The radio shack still might sell a radio called DX 398 ----SNIP---- radios at Radio Shack. These are the prices off the RS Computer as of 2pm Central time today, Oct. 29, 2002: DX-396 is at $29.97 20-226 equivalent to Sangean ATS-xxx ----SNIP---- The DX-396, according to Radio Netherlands review at, http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/ , is a Sangean model, but nobody has yet been able to find a Sangean branded equivallent, ATS-XXX or otherwise. It discontinued at Radio Shack at $29.97. Any time you see a Radio Shack price tag ending in $.97 (97 cents), you know the item is definitely discontinued and that is a blow-out price. The price may continually drop, still showing a $.97 ending, until gone. The last DX-396 probably disappeared from the last Radio Shack store some time back in the early summer of 2003 at the latest. I bought the last one available in the Atlanta area, and regretted that I was not able to get at least two, one to use, and one to hold back for when the one in service might die beyond any possibility of repair. I might even have liked to get more than two, so I could have some for sale or trade later. DX-397 is at $19.97 20-227 " Sangean ATS-xxx The DX-397 was discontinued at $19.97. It is the same radio as the Sangean SG-622, which I understand is still available at a number of Sangean dealers, such as Universal Radio, among others. I have not heard whether that one is discontinued. I think there might be a brief review of that one at the Radio Netherlands website. It can actually fit, and even be operated somewhat inconveniently from, a large shirt pocket, but better for a coat or jacket pocket. I was not impressed with it very much at all, and figured I did not get robbed for $19.97, but I wished I had not spent the money. Ten more bucks might have gotten me a really good small portable radio, another DX-396. DX-398 is at $99.97 20-228 " Sangean ATS-909 DX-399 is at $39.97 20-229 " Sangean ATS-606 or Siemens RK-759 DX-402 is at $69.97* 20-230 " Sangean ATS-505 * As of late November, the DX-402 is $49.97. I also bought a DX-402 and liked that radio quite a bit. I can't say exactly why, but I actually like the ATS-505 better than the ATS-909, and I deliberately chose not to buy a DX-398. If any of those Sangean-made DX-NNN radios are still available anywhere at all, you might be able to find a DX-402 or maybe a DX-399 at some out-of-the-way Radio Shack store somewhere. I think I remember seeing or hearing of a DX-402 still existing unsold in one of the Atlanta area stores as late as October, last year, 2003. And for those AM DXers out there, the word I have is that the AM loop antenna (15-1853/1501853) is discontinued. It is no longer available through the website, and can be found only in the stores until all gone. Current price on this antenna is $19.99. [It's lower now, if you can find one]. The last two of those loops available in the Atlanta area, one of them without its box and without the supplied connector cable, came to my place at $9.97 each. I would suspect all those are now sold and accounted for somewhere for. I have three of them, and might at some future date let one of them go as part of some sale or trade, maybe. The thing that surprises me is that Radio Shack stores in the USA have as yet chosen not to sell or offer for sale by mail order, the Grundig S-350. I rather think they could sell them by the boatload if they wanted to, and I'm not talking about a small boat, either. The last time I was in a Radio Shack store, the only two Grundig-brand shortwave-capable radios they had were the FR-200 emergency crank-powered radio, the YB-400PE, and some smaller model, possibly the Mini World 100, or one of the small Traveller models.
