I someohow feel you've been neither place. Besides teaching at
Berkeley, I went to grad school in Michigan. Wayne State,
in the slums of downtown Detroit.

Actually, I've been on my own since I graduated high school
early at 16. Never had to pay a penny for my education.
I was fortunate enough to be awarded scholarships and graduate
assistantships related to debate paricipaion. I made money
going to college.

I will tell you that Eastern Illinois University granted me
"Assistant Professor" status in 1986.
Better check with them, too.

No, I left there in 1986 to coach a better-funded debate team
at West Georgia College - the school where Newt Gingrich had
been a history professor.

The fact that I'm still teaching should say something about
the severity of any "trouble" you accuse me of having had.

My current job does not require a PhD, just as my job at
Weber State did not require one.

Since 2001 I've had a lot of time to work on those last few
reasons Wayne State was holding up granting my PhD.

Though I had completed all the requirements for a double PhD
at Wayne State (one in Rhetoric and Public Address and the other
in Interpersonal Communication), they degree had not actually
been conferred in 2000.

Problem with one of my dissertation advisors, who had left
Wayne St, signing off on my dissertation.

Most academics take a position before completing their doctorate.
They then finish it up their dissertation and the final approval
processes, including a defense.

Yes, as I have already explained, the degree had not been
technically conferred in 2000, though all the requirements for
it had been completed. Even Weber State recognized that fact,
witnessed by the fact that I was employed for there for 14 years.

I have more than enough academic degrees for my current
teaching position.
