That was exactly what I was trying to do, having OE mark all messages read
when leaving the newsgroup. It worked some of the time, but other times, I
would open the newsgroup and while I was reading messages, I would get an
email that needed my immediate attention. And when I closed my newsreader,
all the messages were marked read and I would lose my place when I went back
to it.

Thanks for everyone's help. And thank you Paul for coming up with the idea
of using a news proxy. That makes a lot of sense, because my anti-viral
software already filters my email through a proxy, so why couldn't a news
group be treated the same way?

I'm going to try it to see what happens. Thanks again to everyone who
offered their expertise.

It's nothing against anyone or any poster. Some threads don't interest me
because they are about a specific radio I don't own. Other threads concern
reception of stations in very far off countries (New Zealand, etc.) that my
limited equipment just can't snag. Still others are too technically natured
such as how to modify a radio or try to understand solar propagation. And of
course, others are the well-known whining threads that get under everyone's
skin.

Please don't feel like this is an insult to anyone. I really respect Michael
Bryant, not just for his knowledge of dxing, but he's a fellow Kentuckian as
well.

I was only trying to find a way to save myself some time so I could better
peruse the parts of the newsgroup that interested me more than others.

I am truly sorry if I offended anyone. I respect everyone who posts here and
consider every one of you to be my superior. I'm just hoping to learn a
little at a time so maybe one day, I can be one of you experts too.

Thanks for understanding.

RNZI used to be a hard station to hear because they used only 7.5-KW of
power. They went to 100-KW about ten years ago. Almost any shortwave
radio can receive RNZI now, when the propagation is good.

That used to happen to me unintentionally several years ago. I used to haunt a
large AOL news forum and, for a while, AOL would cut us off ramdomly. To
counter that, I would at the beginning just ask for the last day's worth, read
or unread, and then mark everything read as I left the session. That would get
rid of anything older than one day.
