Here is a "killer" combination, which I use almost every

Sony 2010 (or any other radio with a mechanical on/off
switch that runs on AC...most AM analog radios work fine
for this), digital timer (like the Intermatic DT-17) and
Sharp LP mini-disc recorder.

Why turn the radio on and off? Because the MD recorder can't be controlled.
With a radio that cannot turn on after a power interruption your timer could
control a mechanically controlled cassette recorder. One could use a VCR to
record the radio's audio without the external timer.

Downside of both schemes is that the radio is not programmed to different
frequencies at different times.
