Above poster is correct. The Passport 2004 actually classifies it as a
"portatop" because it combines aspects and convenience of a portable, but also has features along with size of a tabletop. The thing is known to eat batteries. Maybe you can use rechargables, but I don't know if rechargable D's are that common. I think Radio Shack has them. Compact? Have you actually seen this thing? Most tabletop rigs are far smaller. Big is good as far as I'm concerned but I thought you might want to know as some like small. |

The best way to insure getting a good '800' is to buy a factory (Drake)
refurbished one from someone like Universal. They typically sell for about $399. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

In fact, it seems pretty lame compared to the sync detectors in some other portables (e.g., the Sony SW77). I'd say yours is defective. The sync on mine is outstanding. It *completely* eliminates adjacent channel interference/hets. In mine (was one of the first ones out), it's sync has historically been very good. The original AC adaptor had some issues with it (more along the lines of interference with the radio than anything nasty), but Grundig replaced the AC adaptors for free. Only thing I've noticed in mine is that it's in my basement office, and in the winter time the sync doesn't work so well the past couple of years. Could be that 59F basement that I have in the winter, more than anything else. One of these days, I'm going to send it to Drake to get the sync tweaked for that. On the whole, the 800 is a good portatop. It replaced my Icom R-70, and it seemed to do just as good for DXing (assuming an outside antenna) as the R70 did. And it sounded a lot better, too. --Mike L. --Mike L. |

It is worth noting that eton (Grundig North America) has just discontinued it. I just received this email from Eton regarding the Satellit 800: "It is not discontinued and will sell parallel with the E1." |
