I'm hearing "Varmint!" on 5 MHz in southeast Texas, Saturday night
(U.S. time). There's no sign of Sam on 2.5 or 10 MHz. This is just too bizarre. --------------------------- Registered Monitor BR549 The Shack on the Bayou - www.ghg.net/cliffwatts/ Drake R8, Sony ICF-SW100, Heathkit GR-64 (retired) Realistic Pro-2006, Bearcat BC-245XLT |

Heard here on 10 and 15 MHz at 1520. However, the only thing Sam says after the sort of digital buzz that was present on the original Sam transmissions is 'Varmint'. I tried 5 and 10 Mhz at 0100 and didn't note Sam or any other unusual signal, just WWV as usual. Sam was so strong at my location the first time around that I was able to hear him on my Degen during the day. No such luck this time around. It IS certain that if this is a pirate (not a government operation of some kind) interfering with WWV will get one busted in a hurry. dxAce Michigan USA |

To ask an obvious question What do readers think this is? A prank? Spy station? WWV gone feral? The Sam activity observed in December would seem to point to a spy or some other government operation of some kind. The Sam transmissions were neatly spaced over four different frequencies audible at different levels of signal strength at my location, indicating four different transmitters in four different locations acting together. It is unlikely that a prankster would go to such trouble. The big question is what it means, if indeed it's a spy station. It was theorized that it was a "go signal" for some sort of spy operation. But since it's back at reduced power (my check of 5 and 10 Mhz at 0100 showed nothing unusual) that would not seem to be the case. cheers Peter "dxAce" wrote in message ... I, too am hearing Sam on 5 MHZ with a strong signal in North Texas.
This is almost certainly a covert "go" signal from our government. Could be an exercize (most likely). It's on WWV at 5 mHz because that provides a "BFO" for cheap SW receivers. I will note the times I hear him. Please note those you hear. Loud 3:22:50 Z Loud 3:23:35 Z Weak 3:24:05 Z Like that. Let's see if we can do a little snooping of our own. |

I don't think you can draw that conclusion, since at any given time, different frequencies are going to have different propogation (and noise) characteristics. However, I agree with your conclusion that it wasn't some prank simply because of the precise timing of the signals and the apparant data burst at the start. -- Eric F. Sam in North Texas, 5 mHz
This pattern: moderate 3:25:25 Loud 3:26:10 weak 3:27:25 weak 3:28:10 Loud 3:28:50 Loud 3:29:25 moderate 3:30:10 was followed by this pattern: 3:32:08 weak 3:32:48 weak 3:33:28 weak 3:34:08 weak 3:35:28 weak 3:36:08 loud 3:36:48 weak Sam seems to have stopped at this time, at least in North Texas. The pattern likely carries some intelligence in itself. More like "Uncle Sam," if you ask me. D.S. |

I take back my earlier observation that it wasn't a go signal-apparently the idea that it IS a go signal from the CIA or some other spy agency is credible, judging from the posts here. Any speculation as to what it indicates? There was no major news making event that happened after the Sam transmissions in December (unless you want to theorize that the tsunami was caused by HAARP), but for the government to go to this sort of trouble indicates that it's SOMETHING big. |

While it's likely this is part of a large exercise, it is possible for it to be a "real deal." A lot of operations that affect the safety of our nation go down without you or I hearing a single thing about it, now or later. I could tell you about some from the 1980s, but then I'd have to kill ya ;-). |

I live forty miles East of Vicksburg,Mississippi.Sometimes I hear and if
I happen to be outside I see some big Helicopters flying due West and sometimes flying Soutwest,I almost never see them flying East. What woke me up at about 7:00 AM yesterday (Saturday) morning was one of the loudest (and I do mean loud!) Helicopters flying directly over my roof so low I thought it was going to scrape the roof off of my house and it was flying due West too.I don't know if that has anything to do with anything big or Yosemite Sam or not. cuhulin |
