Night time fading on short wave
I have been experiencing some unexplained night time fading lately. An
example of this is Radio Netherlands out of the Antilles during the 04:00 to 05:00 UTC nightly broadcast on 9590. The fading is over some 10 or 15 minutes time . The signal goes from over +S9 to S3 over about 30 seconds for a 10 to 15 minute period. Then it comes back the same way. Anyone else getting this? The only thing I can relate it to is the solar wind magnetic component swinging plus to minus. This has been happening to me evenings for the last week. The fading is not unlike a daytime path fade from a solar flare. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

Does this 'unexplained night time fading' extend to any other Shortwave Band besides 31 Meters ? Yes. Other examples would be BBC on 5975 and also 9525. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

Well, this might explain things. http://www.sec.noaa.gov/alerts/alerts_timeline.html Looks like the wind speed has been changing dramatically along with polarity. I'm just wondering if other people have noticed the night time path fading. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

I have monitored this frequency for two days for Radio Netherlands in various languages and have had a consistent S9 to S9 +10dB Signal Level with an Icom IC-R75 and these Shortwave Antennas : . * NS Low Noise Inverted "L" Antenna - 75/25 Foot #14 AWG Stranded (19) with a RF Junkie "SWL-1" 10:1 MLB and RG8 Coax Cable Feed-in-Line . * EW Low Noise Inverted "L" Antenna - 30/15 Foot Hook-Up Wire with a TV type 300 Ohm to 75 Ohm Matching Transformer and RG6 Coax Cable Feed-in-Line. . * Shield RG8 Coax Cable Loop Antenna - 13 Foot NS with Pre-Amp #2 engaged . * Shield RG6 Coax Cable Inverted Triangle Loop Antenna - 30 Foot EW with Pre-Amp #2 engaged. . ~ RHF OK-Land, Cali-4-Ni-A 37:47:02 N 122:13:55 W Yeah, the norm for me is very strong signal S9 to +10dB on a folded dipole and a flat horizontal loop. No amplifiers. When conditions are right and the band is hot they can be as much as +30dB average. -- Telamon Ventura, California |
