I reccomend GPRS radios instead of FRS, the range is better and there's less dropout because it's digital instead of FM. But I already have FRS and aren't wanting to buy another set of radios. Then do yourself a favour and *don't(!)* take the FRS-radios with you. The FRS-freqs are in use by other services in europe and you will risk to get in big trouble using the FRS-radios in europe. At least the radios will be confiscated if you get cought and you will have a look from inside a police-station for some hours and maybe have to pay a additional fine.... PMR-radios have a TX-output of 500mW providing a range of about 500- 1000mtrs (1500-3000ft) in urban areas and up to 5 km (3 mls) or even more from exponated locations. These PMR-radios are cheap. Cost about 25 -50 EUROs a pair. They mostly run on 3 or 4 AAA-cells or rechargable Batteries. Yes, I have the info now, we have diff frqs in N Amer. I did talk to a guy who used them between two cars driving through Norway, and I'm guessing they didn't interfere with anyone so no trouble. We'll check into PMR when we get there. Cell phone looks prohibitively expensive to take the local cell phone over (it will work over there). I can roam through Canada and most of the USA as if local with no additional charges but not over there. This will allow me to avoid women's clothing stores etc. |
