It were all Dejanews round here when I were a lad.

(Actually, that's not true. It was all Bitnet/UUCP listserv gateways
when I were a lad. And it were Gopher interfaces onto Usenet when I
were a student; now there's an interface that actually *works* with
Usenet. But I digress.)

Thanks for all the responses, chaps.

Hi, I'm a British citizen based near Cheltenham, UK. I'm trying to
find a newsgroup to discuss shortwave DXing, but this newsgroup seems
to be full of American politics. I'm not American, I don't plan on
being American, so this is just irritating noise to me, and what with
me having neither the ability nor desire to vote in the USA, I doubt
that the political posters care about me one jot. Also I don't DX
American stations, I prefer European, African or Asian stations (US
stations seem mostly religious and I'm a humanist [agnostic/atheiest
with morals] so that all goes over my head).

What other DXing newsgroups exist on Usenet? Is there one more skewed
towards European, African or Asian DXing?

(Don't get me wrong; America is a lovely place, been there on business
and holiday several times, nice people etc. I'm just not interested
and democratically unable to be involved with the politics, and have
no interest in religion).

Best to look for a moderated forum, probably via the web, that is
directed towards UK listeners specifically. This group is unmoderated,
and most of the people here are Americans. I can say that in your area
most of your DX will be from Africa and the Middle East/Central Asia. I
wouldn't consider stations beamed to Europe DX for you because they're
more or less beamed to your area. You might hear some Asian domestics
every so often, but most of them are beamed east (ie away from you) so
they're harder to hear in Europe. US stations are mostly religious,
because the preachers are the only ones who have the money for SW yet
who are denied coverage on other domestic US media. WBCQ has some pirate
type programming, and if they're still around WRMI has a variety of
programming because they sell airtime for $1 a minute. WRMI broadcasts
many programs from Cuban exile groups (they're located in Miami,Florida,
the call letters mean Radio Miami International).

Check out the discussion groups on Yahoo.com. There are several radio
related groups and discussions are for the most part civil and focused
on radio. Every once in a while a xenophobe will make an inappropriate
comment on the Degen radio groups, but they are usually yanked back
into line.

Andrew -- Check out the groups on Yahoo! Groups. See
http://groups.yahoo.com for the top page. Search on Shortwave or go to:

http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/dir/1603396379

to go to the "Hobbies & Crafts Hobbies Amateur and Ham Radio
Shortwave" section.

You can also find groups covering specific types of shortwave
broadcasts, individual broadcasters, manufacturers and even specific
models of SW receivers (i.e., dedicated specifically to the Sony ISF-
SW100).
