![]() David wrote: Siberia's rapid thaw causes alarm The whole western Siberian sub-Arctic region has started to thaw The world's largest frozen peat bog is melting, which could speed the rate of global warming, New Scientist reports. The huge expanse of western Siberia is thawing for the first time since its formation, 11,000 years ago. The area, which is the size of France and Germany combined, could release billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This could potentially act as a tipping point, causing global warming to snowball, scientists fear. The situation is an "ecological landslide that is probably irreversible and is undoubtedly connected to climatic warming," researcher Sergei Kirpotin, of Tomsk State University, Russia, told New Scientist magazine. The whole western Siberian sub-Arctic region has started to thaw, he added, and this "has all happened in the last three or four years". Warming fast Western Siberia has warmed faster than almost anywhere on the planet, with average temperatures increasing by about 3C in the last 40 years. The warming is believed to be due to a combination of man-made climate change, a cyclical atmospheric phenomenon known as the Arctic oscillation and feedbacks caused by melting ice. When you start messing around with these natural systems, you can end up in situations where it's unstoppable The 11,000-year-old bogs contain billions of tonnes of methane, most of which has been trapped in permafrost and deeper ice-like structures called clathrates. But if the bogs melt, there is a big risk their hefty methane load could be dumped into the atmosphere, accelerating global warming. Scientists have reacted with alarm at the finding, warning that future global temperature predictions may have to be revised. "When you start messing around with these natural systems, you can end up in situations where it's unstoppable," David Viner, of the University of East Anglia, UK, told the Guardian newspaper. "There are no brakes you can apply. "This is a big deal because you can't put the permafrost back once it's gone. The causal effect is human activity and it will ramp up temperatures even more than our emissions are doing." The intergovernmental panel on climate change speculated in 2001 that global temperatures would rise between 1.4C and 5.8C between 1990 and 2100. However these estimates only considered global warming sparked by known greenhouse gas emissions. "These positive feedbacks with landmasses weren't known about then," Dr Viner said. "They had no idea how much they would add to global warming." I'm not knowlegeable enough to say whether global warming is a natural cycle or whether it was partly induced by manmade pollution. That it is happening is beyond doubt. A trip through alaska reveals glaciers melting rapidly. |

It is a natural cycle that comes and goes.Humans have nothing to do with
global warming.Everytime a Volcano erupts,it puts more polution into the Air than Humans ever have and ever could do.Unlax Doc,it is all only the natural workings of the World. cuhulin |

Not a damm 4-wheeler old lady car. Get an old rusted out Ford PU, then you can toss yer beer cans and soda cans in the tailbed and as you drive you can watch and bet when the cans FALL THRU the rust holes onto the highway below whilst turning or changing lanes on the Interstate. Trucks I have owned before.1948 Chevrolet Pickup truck,1954 Ford one ton
truck which I bought at East Ford Company dealership,it had a big box bed/body behind the cab,it originally was previously owned by a farmer in Illinois and later on,I traded that truck for a 1967 Ford pickup truck which I traded that truck for the 1948 Chevrolet pickup truck to a guy who worked where I worked at Delta Cotton Oil company on Valley Street.Later on,I bought a 1968 Chevrolet pickup truck from another guy who worked at Delta Cotton Oil company.I am not a redneck (you dont know how the word/term redneck/rednecks came about) Sure,I like trucks,my vans (1971 Chevrolet van,my 1978 Dodge van,my 1982 Ford van,my 1971 big ex-bread truck van,my 1942 Willys World War Two Jeep,my 1948 Willys civilian Jeep, are all classified as trucks.I prefer my Jeeps and my vans and my 1914 Ford Model T Runabout Roadster car (it isn't for sale or trade) to regular style trucks and pickup trucks.I am not the "image" of a redneck in yours or anybody elses feeble little Nitwit Numbskull "mind" driving down the road and throwing my empty beer cans in the back of a pickup truck.I do my beer drinking right here on my couch in my house and I throw my empty beer cans in a big plastic garbage bag.Anything else you think! I should do? You MORON! cuhulin |

Through out earths history their have been many ice ages followed by warming periods. One could say the earth is warming up, because we are now coming out of a 10,000 year ice age. Man has little to nothing to do with it. Read anything by Dr. Dixie Lee Ray, I believe is her name, and she spells it out quite well. J |

Does NASA ring a bell? Could it be that in the past 30 years we learned more? If the Gulf Stream quits bringing warm water to New England and Europe might they get colder while Equatorial regions get warmer. The word for today is ''thermohaline''. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermohaline_circulation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Younger_Dryas |
