Default Problems with Degen 1103

Sorry for being a troll here, but I thought I had better make mention of
my situation in case other people are considering purchasing a Degen
radio such as 1103 from Ebay or Liypn

I first have to praise Liypn being professional and answering *direct*
questions anyone has. However, the products that are exported by Degen,
specifically the 1103 lacks proper testing and quality control. The
consumer should be aware of this fact, but Liypn or other Ebay sellers
make no mention of this. Of course, some may say, "why should they"?

Any how, I spent over $120 for the radio including sending it back to
China for warranty repair. I was one of the unlucky ones where there was
a tuner issue with the 1103's. I could've bought something more reliable
and with a better warranty where shipping was not an issue for less.

As I didn't use the radio very much, the tuner issue didn't render its
ugly face until near the end of the warranty period. I contacted the
seller and I was reminded that I was responsible for shipping. Fair
enough, I knew that already. My radio was in mint shape, no scratches or
anything. I sent the radio to China and then I am informed when it
arrived that it was NOT in mint shape because one of the radio's 5 cent
face sticker was curling (cheap adhesive was used). I was informed that
since the radio is NOT mint there would be an added charge. Another way
to make a money.

So, I pay the difference and get a [supposed] new version of the 1103. I
receive it and the first thing I notice is that the battery compartment
is a little smaller than the old radio because I had a difficult time
inserting the stock rechargeable batteries that originally came with the
1103. Then, I proceeded to use the radio. I tried the FM and tried
shortwave. FM was fine, short wave had a lot of distortion. I then
proceeded to program my favourite local AM radio stations. The AM band
has moderate distortion too.

I checked the Yahoo Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kaito-de1103/
and I found out that many people are complaining about the distortion
issue with the [Degen 1103]'s.

My point is that everyone needs to be careful. I don't recommend buying
from a retailer in China, irregardless if many people are happy with his
service. The quality and quality control may be lacking as is with the
1103's. You live and learn. I shall not buy from this Ebay seller
again nor from someone overseas unless I can afford to absorb the cost of
the item if something is defective.

I know there are people here in support of Lipyn, but I had to share my
experiences as it appears not be atypical, despite the high rating the
seller receives from his buyers (he does sell other products too). After
a while, you can't change your feedback on Ebay, so that could be why the
ratings are high. There is no ratings or areas of feedback for post 6
months.

Enough of my ranting.
Cheers,

Default Problems with Degen 1103

- Have more or less the same take on Degen DE1105;
- a Nice, Nice radio, but some initial QC problems...
frustrating but work-aroundable..

their statement that " Outside Interference may cause the radio to not
operate properly "
- sounds like funky / Buggy control software..
they suggest that taking out the batteries out for 10 minutes..
- In other words, " Reboot The Radio"

- Sometimes turning it on / off or replacing the batteries does the
trick here..

did not trust the " rechargeables " 220 volt stuff,
one little glitch could fry the radio

Anyhoo.. really like the radio, feel I have gotten my $$$'s worth..
and would repurchase one / similar one from the same seller.

really,
where else can you get a shirt pocket sized radio - Degen DE1105 in
this case -

that will let you walk around in the early hours in Northeast U.S.A
Listening to radio Australia off the whip
??

Those cheap quality plug in the wall outlets (or with useing an
adapter/wall wart) Chinese radios are likely to burn your house down
too.

Why would anyone buy an electronic product directly from China in the
first place?...I am not sure how you would save any money buying a
degen from China, over a Kaito that are sold in North America...At
least if you bought it here you don't have to spend $40 to have it
shiped back to China for any warranty work if needed...

I've said it hundreds of times - DON'T BUY CHINESE BRANDED ELECTRONICS! You
will do much more than save your cash - believe me.

That's is because of the high mark-up. These cheap Chinese radios are sold
at or below cost.
The U.S. dealer can just toss it in the trash and send you a new one and
still hold a profit.
The Chinese simply want to muscle out all the competition in the low end
portables.

Get a Sony while you still can.

Interesting. I have purchased lots of radios from two different ebay
vendors from China, so this peeked my interest.

I have been luckey.......so far, and everything has been fine for me.

They nicked you for taking off the stickers on the front of the radio?
I never would have thought of that. Pretty low if you ask me.

When I buy from the China radio sellers, I go in with the notion that
if there are problems with the goods, I will just have to eat the loss
and move on.

Sorry that you got stung like that, but thanks for the heads up on the
warranty issues.

The commies target industries to dominate. Try buying a light fixture
that ISN'T made in China. Cheap electronics? Same thing. Check out
magnets. I did a search for Super magnets (neodymium) the other day. It
seems China is the only one making them now. I couldn't find any other
source.

The availability of near slave labour, very low corporate taxation and
NO pollution laws, make China an attractive place for corporations to
fatten their bottom lines.

China is now the US's largest trading partner and produces something
close to thirty percent of all manufactured good in the world. They have
a massive space program and one of the world's largest armies.

Canada, in their wisdom, is sending them FOREIGN AID money. It appears
stupidity, incompetence and massive corruption are not limited to
Washington.

Actually, the stickers were not removed, it was just ONE sticker that
was a *little* curled. If I knew Liypn would've been so anal about that,
I would have easily used some glue to straighten it out. Again, I don't
have faith or trust in people like him. I am glad at least that your
experiences have been different than mine. Never again will I buy
another China product unless it comes with an extended warranty, even if
I have to pay a bit more. Like someone said, a cheap man always pays
more in the end.
