Hmmmm, well, if given the option a second time, I probably wouldn't buy
it for $100, even if the newer ones are more stable than the early
model I picked up. The major plus is that it's quite sensitive. I
don't particularly care for all of the images on this set. As far as
this type of radio (analog w/digital readout) goes, I prefer my ol'
Panasonic RF-2600 and 2900 (admittedly these two models, as well,
suffer from some image problems). The S350 is excellent on batteries.
By and large, the audio is pretty decent on the S350, although mine
rarely remains stationary on a SW frequency for long. I do use the
S350 a lot for FM listening, for which it's fairly decent.
This thing seems to have been designed for those who have some
nostalgia for old portables like the two Panasonics mentioned above.
Would an 11 year old go for it? I honestly don't have any idea. But
all the best in making your decision.

Agreed. To name a few advantages of the '7600GR over the S350:
'7600GR provides single sideband and synchronous selectable sideband
reception. Memories. No drift. Direct frequency entry. Etc etc.

Where has this receiver been offered new for $100? Cheapest I've seen it
lately is around $150.

7600GR's show up at $100 occasionally when a retailer wants to close them out.

From time to time, Amazon and J&R Music World offer them on sale for
about $129.00. Keep checking their sites.

I bought two more of them (giving me a total of five) from Amazon this
past December for $129.15 each with free shipping.

While not "perfect" (what radio is?), it's definitely the best overall
small portable SW receiver available right now. It would be ideal for a
child as she will never outgrow it.

Best,

Joe

You can add the audio outputs and reduce the internal noise
on a weak station. On the other hand, you increase the frequency
of losing sync lock on a weak station, so it may not pay.

Curiously, the audio phase is reversed in the 7600G (no R) so you can't
add one of those in the mix usefully.

A better approach costwise is buy a better synch detector'd receiver,
like the old 2010, for weak stations, of course.

I'd add the R8B but I don't know that it's better costwise than
14 7600GR's by experience.

I went for the Degen 1107 on Ebay, I think about 54bucks shipped from
China. Very good writeup on the radiointel.com site so what the heck.

This would probably be a better choice than the S350. (and that, too,
at half the price!)
By the way, could you please provide the link for the radiointel review
on the 1107? I didn't find it when I took a look there.
I wonder how the performance of the DE1107 compares with Sony's analog
SW11... Seem to be similar in coverage, although the Degen offers the
75m band and better coverage of the 41m band.

Default Grundig S350 & S350DL

Everyone who is contemplating buying a Grundig/Eton S350 or S350DL or
who already owns one, and especially anyone thinking of buying one used
off eBay
or from a dealer, should be aware that there has just been a dramatic
change
in the list price in recent weeks.

It appears that Eton/Grundig has reduced the list price on the
S350DL radio from $150 to $100 (and also the list price on the
YB550PE from $100 to $80). I had gotten a catalog from a
mail-order dealer who I did not consider to be a source of radios
(Siegler & Co.) that had some Eton radios in it, and was
surprised to see the S350DL at only $99.95. I went through
a series of contacting them to verify that it was really the
S350DL and not just the S350, and they assured me that it
really was the S350DL. I had a 10%-off on-line order discount
code and so I ordered one. Since I thought that this was
a really surprisingly good deal, I also notified Hauser's "DXLD"
Yahoo group and the SWPrograms mailing list about this.

Then I happened to actually *read* the print in Eton's ads
in PopComm and noticed that the February and March '06
ads show the list price of the S350DL now to be $100,
and they no longer listed the old S350. The Feb '06 MT
still has the old Eton ad with the S350DL at $150 list and
the S350 at $100; I haven't gotten the March issue yet.

Anyway, this certainly affects all the S350 and S350DL owners
and sellers and prospective buyers, and also makes it much
less advantageous to get the Tecsun version! I did a quick
Google search just now and see that many sites are still selling
these at the old higher prices, and it seems that the news
about the new lower prices has not propagated widely.

This should drive the price of any remaining new S350s still on a
dealer's shelf down to maybe $50 as a discontinued close-out, and
also cause the prices of any used S350s and S350DLs on eBay
or used-radio-dealer sale lists to plummet! Also much wailing
and gnashing of teeth amongst those who bought these
radios at the old price, I expect. A similar effect on YB550PE
prices, too.

So I hope the info can be spread among the SW-radio community.

Also, I took a look at the www.etoncorp.com website --
BOTH the S350 and S350DL are listed on it at $100 list price each!
The YB550PE, which is in the current ad in PopComm at the new lower
price of $80, isn't mentioned at all!

73, Will Martin
