I know Cleveland... from Bill Randall on WERE and Mad Daddy and Alan Freed on WJW to Color Radio 14 to Big Wilson on WJW and NormBob's creation of WIXY on to the artful WMMS, General Cinema's and Nationwide's efforts at FM CHR in the 70's, etc., etc. Part of my family has been in local media for a number of generations. And I know that what apparently is your favorite station was low in the rating, a sales failure, and soon forgotten. |

That is typical radio mind-gaming. When I beat Rick Dees in Birmingham, we sent a funeral wreath up in the elevator. In Phoenix, I heard of a PD being sent a live ewe. wind up chickens, vegetables (especially big carrots) and such are frequently exchanged between rival stations. This is fun rivalry, and is part of what makes radio entertaining. You obviously do not have a sense of humor. They were very popular especially among the people who cared about their audio quality. I dont believe in ratings at all,,, except when bush's ratings (and all
politicians) are at an all time LOW. I wonder why that divorced woman in Petal,Mississippi hasen't said anything to me lately? cuhulin |

WMMS was quite successful too, but only in promoting Peter's "3 foot King Kong" myth. They overcompressed; everything above 8kHz was noise. But they were THE HOME OF THE BUZZARD and had cool giveaways. Those things do impress a 15 year old kid who hasn't got the best hearing. I knew some of those kids back them -- but they grew up. And WWWM's low-key approach to music would have -- and did, for some of them -- appeal to 'em. When they changed ownership, those people didn't go to WMMS -- they held their nose and went to WGCL/WNCX. Or, they listened to *me* on the college station. I am starting to understand you. Actually, they did not. They were far less sophisticated, and undermeasured ethnic group members and many lifestyle groups. Since then, Arbitron has developed DST, where they use special techniques to insure proportional participation of Blacks and Hispanics and get adequate young adult male participation. the current product is vastly better than it was even 10 years ago. But they were THE HOME OF THE BUZZARD and had cool giveaways. And it was the #1 station in the 1985-1982 period where WWWM existed. And I am currently having the biggest run of "Worst to First" experiences I have ever had... 12 major markets, in fact. That is because I listen to listeners, and help build stations that appeal to them and, thus, appeal to advertisers who want to reach those listeners. It is that simple. |

I looked it up in my Rand McNalley Road Atlas in my bathroom library
when I went to take a leak just now.Cleveland,Mississippi,,, population about 15,384 thousand.(I didn't know it was that big a town,having never been there before.Cleveland,Ohio,,,,, ohhhhh,,,,,, forget about it. cuhulin |
