The french were just one of the "imperialist" dinosaurs whose time had come to be extinct. Too many empires were helping themselves to the resources and riches of other peoples' countries and carting it all off home to make wealth. In the the process, they raped, impoverished and degraded the people who took their opportunity to rid themselves of these thieves. We got caught up in the flow of history when communism led the final push to rid the country of their overlords. Now we think we can do the same with any country that has oil, only instead of godless communists, we have fanatical muslims. And leading the crusade is an equally fanatical american president who thinks he talks to God and that God wants us to kill fantical muslims. Does anyone see a volatility and historical irony here ? As for nuclear weapons, the genie is out of the bottle, and I can tell you he don't want to go back in. The age when people shared with one another and competition was not to prevent each other from staying in business, it spurred genuine innovation and prosperity. Like it or not, we have no right to the oil that belongs to other countries. Not even our best missiles or outrageous consumption gives us title. And the fantics in the countries that hold the largest reserves hold the trump card. If we try to seize the oil, the fields will be destroyed, but whoever owns it, it runs out in our lifetime and we all step back into the stone age no matter how powerful we think we are.

So enjoy the way things are now, because those days are being swept away by a storm of our own making. Vietnam will be repeated again and again. And in the end, we will lose everything civilised that was created in the last 50,000 years. I will find no pleasure or comfort in watching people suffer, especially those I love, and we will not see God clapping His hands for joy at who we destroyed, but weeping that we never got the point.
