I just picked up a 12 year old Sony 2010 in very very nice condition and
working perfectly. With this radio being 12 years old, how many years of reliable service should it have left. Thanks for any info. on this subject...I don't really understand the technical stuff behind these radios and hope the damn thing can run another 12 years and not even blink, but perhaps that is wishful thinking??? If electronics are well-designed, and operated consistently below their rated limits, they'll last for decades. Example: Two of my O-scopes (Tektronix 7904 and 7904A) were built in the late 70's and mid 80's respectively. They're both in excellent shape and working just grand, 20+ years after they each rolled off the assembly line. I don't expect them to fail any time soon. -- Dr. Anton Squeegee, Director, Dutch Surrealist Plumbing Institute (Known to some as Bruce Lane, KC7GR) kyrrin a/t bluefeathertech d-o=t c&o&m Motorola Radio Programming & Service Available - http://www.bluefeathertech.com/rf.html "Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati" (Red Green) |

I used to service the 2010's. Most of the failures were from user abuse,
such as dropping the set, or substituting the external power supply for one that was out of specs. A few common things that would go wrong were the users breaking the antenna. Another was leaving batteries in the radio and letting them leak, thus doing damage. Some others were forcing controls and breaking them, dropping the radio thus causing damage to the tuning control, and or the LCD display. When putting on an external outdoor antenna, it would be good to take care for static electricity on the antenna, especially from a thunder shower. This can cause the main RF input FET devices to be damaged. A protection unit of some type would be recommended. If the set has poor sensitivity on the short wave bands, the input FET's are the usual cause. These are very easy for an experienced service tech to change, and then check the set for proper sensitivity. If the set is used with care, and kept in a dry place that is at the normal room temperature range, it should last a very long time. Never leave weak batteries inside, and when using an AC adaptor, use the original type, or one that you are sure that it meets specs. The on board retractable antenna can be easily broken. I have one myself that is about 10 to 12 years old, and use it often. The only thing I did to it was change the mechanical filter to one that is a bit more narrow for the wideband. I also re-aligned the IF amps and front end to peak it up. There was not much improvement from re-aligning it, than from the factory. Infact, I was only able to see the very slight differences on the instrumentation, but not hear the difference. The set has very good reception, and is a good performer for the class of receiver that it is. The sound quality on this receiver is also very good. -- Greetings, Jerry Greenberg GLG Technologies GLG ========================================= WebPage http://www.zoom-one.com Electronics http://www.zoom-one.com/electron.htm ========================================= "Rob R." wrote in message ink.net... I haven't used it much in the last 7-8 years but do keep batteries in it in case of power outages but I bought a 2001 (not the D) used about 15 years ago and it's still going strong, looks used (actually it looked used when I bought it) but it's still doing it's thing. Rob Mills ~ Tulsa |

Hi,
The 2001 is also a very good little radio. For portability, it is a preferred set. It is unfortunate that Sony no longer manufactures these types of radios. I am not to impressed with their newer models compared to these series of sets. The same is for the Panasonic as well. Naturally the ultimate type of receiver, is to get an Icom, Drake, or something along that line. But, it is also a lot more dollars. -- Greetings, Jerry Greenberg GLG Technologies GLG ========================================= WebPage http://www.zoom-one.com Electronics http://www.zoom-one.com/electron.htm ========================================= "Rob Mills" wrote in message news:K2SCb.789$PK3.722@okepread01... In today's electronics, it's usually the mechanical stuff that starts failing
from manipulation more than the electrical stuff fails from equipment operation. Bill, K5BY |

Rob R I have a Sony ICF-2001 (not ICF-2001D) that is 23 years old and still works fine. I have a Sony TFM-116 that is 41 years old and still works fine. So I anticipate my 10 year old Sony ICF-2010---not to mention my Sony CD players, Sony Walkman, Sony TV, Sony headphones, Sony tape recorder (all about 10 to 20 years old) will certaintly outlast me. Then again... my car is in excellent shape (21 years old), I still use a Motorola 'Brick' cell phone (14 years old) and my FRG-7 (23 years old) is still in the double box in factory new condition with all accessories untouched (including QC tag). My Drake TR-4 (26 years old) is in pristine condition and is also in the factory box with it's QC tag too. Heck... I even have a 60 year old ARC-5 Command Set in an unopened factory carton! How long it lasts depends on how well you take care of it... Sincerely, RG |

Take care of it and it should last you many years. I've had a 2010 before. It's VERY well-built, and (unless the entire world goes to digital rather than analog signals) it should provide you with years of listening pleasure. -- -- //Steve// Steve Silverwood, KB6OJS Fountain Valley, CA Email: Please visit the following sites: American Shortwave Listening Club (ASWLC) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aswlc Southern California Area DXers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scads |
