Default Spectra Fermware

Can I change the firmware in a 128 conv spectra to a trunking type?

Yes, But you don't have to change the firmware. All you have to do is
clone in a trunking codeplug using Lab and it will work. If you clone in a
trunking codeplug and then do the Service-Command Board replacement
procedure it should work fine. Before you do the replacement procedure, be
sure and write down or print out all the alignment values (called Alignment
Summary on the print menu). Using the command board replacement procedure
reinitializes the processor.

If you want to go one step better, you should actually change the model
number in the MLM and Command Board to one for a trunking model. (see
Batlabs on how to do this).

Tester;
I have an 800 MHz C7 MLM that I would like to use to upgrade a 450 MHz
A5 model. Is it possible to do this with "lab"?

It is possible but probably easier to just dump a trunking compatible
codeplug into the 450 radio without changing the actual MLM module.

If you really want to go to all that trouble, then look at Batlabs. There
is info there on which byte of the MLM to change to designate the radio's
freq band. Install your new MLM and you will get FAIL 999. Use Lab to
change the MLM and Command Board serial numbers to match (make them match
the radio). Then you will get FAIL 001 since the MLM data is out of range
for your radio. Use Lab to change the freq band to the correct one (and
also use it to change the model number, etc as specified on Batlabs).
Finally, read the radio codeplug and delete all the systems/modes since
they will be invalid. Change the ones remaining to valid UHF data and
rewrite the radio. This should work. I have done it from UHF to VHF, and
800 to 900 with no problems. But you do run a risk of screwing up by
changing the wrong values somewhere in lab. Then you could have a useless
paperweight unless you get another new MLM.

So, forcing in a trunking codeplug is easier.

Tester;
Will this method permanently change the contents of the MLM so that it
will always be a C7 or will it need to be forced each time a change is made?

It depends on what features you start with, but you might have a situation
where you will need to always start from a saved copy of your codeplug vs.
reading it from the radio. If the features in the radio command board are
different than the ones in the MLM/codeplug, then when you read the radio
it will revert to the ones available in the command board. This usually
only affects some settings like secure-capable or zones and not basic
features like trunking.

Again, I have found I can convert a non-trunked radio to trunking by just
forcing in a trunked codeplug and then do the command board replacement
process (again be sure and write down all the alignment settings). Then
the radio will work fine as a trunking radio from that point on.

Also, if you read all the info on Batlabs you will see it is possible using
lab to permanently change the MLM and Command Board to have what ever
features you want. So, it is possible to make it permanent. It just takes
a little more work and higher risk of doing something wrong. I have opted
for the easier and less risky solution of just forcing in another codeplug
and reinitializing the command board.

Thanks;
I will give it a whirl. I have a nice UHF A5 and would like to transpose
the C7 codeplug and control head from an 800 MHz model.

I didn't think the command board differed much between models or bands.
