Default k - newbie stumped right at the start! Help me?

I just bought a PRO-2033 and would like to hear 460.300 and what's listed as
the 'talk-around'. I am completely ignorant and trying to get a grasp on
this stuff. My Dad was a chief of police (passed away in 2000) and I've got
tons of cops in the family but hate to admit I never paid attention and ask
one of them

When I hit the scan button, the digital readout just runs 1 through 10 and
flashes all zeros every time. If I turn the squelch down, it stops, but it's
just static. So it appears auto scanning doesn't even pick anything up at
all. Is it my location or my reception?

When I try to manually enter the frequency, it gives me an error every time
or simply nothing.

Do you think I am a) doing it wrong. b) the scanner itself doesn't function
properly or c) my antenna isn't working?

Is it also possible that the previous owner locked out lots of frequencies?
I think the only way to unlock one is to enter the exact number first.

Any guidance for a complete new person who is seriously interested in doing
this?

TIA,

Mary

Mary, a good first step would be to check the manual for that
radio (Radio Shack has many available online if you don't have
it) and perform a "reset." That will get you back to the shape
the radio was in when it came out of the box. Then follow the
manual for entering a new frequency. If the radio is working
properly, that ought to get you started. If it DOESN'T work,
your radio may not be working right. Oh--you DO have an
antenna of some kind hooked to it?

The "manual"--perhaps an altogether
forgotten concept. ;-P

Actually, that was the first thing I looked for - they have instructions &
help but no actual manual for this model (at least not at radio shack's
site). Just very, very basic instructions. I'll look again though and see
if there isn't one posted elsewhere.

I'm the type that reads manuals from cover to cover and enjoy pointing out
every little feature that people who 'know' how to work things never
realized existed because they don't read them.

Thanks!

This is how you do it:

(From the info on the 2033 (There is no manual online!)

STORING FREQUENCIES INTO CHANNELS

You can store a frequency into each of the scanner's 10 channels. Good
references for active frequencies are Radio Shack's "Police Call Guide
Including Fire and Emergency Services," "Maritime Frequency Directory,"
and "Aeronautical Frequency Directory." We update these directories
every year so be sure to get a current copy.

1. Press MANUAL. Enter the channel number you want to store a
frequency in.

2. Press PROGRAM. 000.000 flashes on the display.

3. Enter the desired frequency. (example 460.300, remember the decimal
point!)

4. Press E (enter) to store the frequency. The stored frequency
flashes
on the display.

If you made a mistake in Step 3, ERROR appears on the display. Press */
CLEAR and repeat Steps 3-4.

5. Repeat Steps 1-4 to program more channels.

If you want to program the next channel in order, repeat Steps 2-

Very helpful

Mary you can try initalizing the scanner by doing the following:

INITIALIZING THE SCANNER

If the scanner's display locks up or does not work properly after you
connect to power, follow these steps to initialize the scanner.

Caution: This procedure clears all information in the scanner's memory.
Initialize the scanner only when you are sure the scanner is not
working properly.

1. Turn off your scanner by turning VOLUME toward OFF until it clicks.

2. Press and hold 2, 9, and */CLEAR, then turn VOLUME toward MAX to turn
on the scanner.

Which came of Radio Shacks web site, They don't have the manual there as
you said but there is some info about features etc and this was in the
installation section

Hoep it helps a bit

I tried all the suggestions here, including resetting the unit, but with no
good results. I removed the antenna while it was on and there was no
difference whatsoever in what I was hearing. Here is a description of the
antenna that came with it:

30 to 512MHz. Extends to 40". (Use plug adapter #278-117 for scanners that
have BNC connector.)

So how do I know if it has a BNC connector? Maybe the antenna needs an
adapter? Could this be the case, even though I do get the 'wx' broadcasts?

All new stuff to me - I feel like other people do when I talk about software
In too deep.

Thanks for the hand!!

OK - I feel like such a geek. I'm sitting her past midnight with a grin on
my face because I finally figured out what my problem was!! It was scanning
1 through 10 and flashing zeros because *I didn't know it was only scanning
the programmed frequencies*. Of which there were none yet! I thought scan
would scan through all available frequencies not just ones I specified.
Anyone know if there is a way to scan that way, too?

Gees - thanks for all the help. I'm off to bed!

Mary
