Thanks for telling what the oval objects are. I have seen them and often
wondered just what they are or what they were for. "Dan Yemiola AI8O" wrote in message ... I don't know about the other objects, but in picture #9, the oval object is a "turning web". They are used when you have to reverse the direction of a cable, but keep it on the same line. The radius of the web is larger than the minimum radius the cable can handle. It keeps the wires inside the cable from flexing too much and breaking as the cables direction changes. This may or may not be a part of the "mystery box". It is probably part of the local Telco physical plant. "TerryinDTW" wrote in message ups.com... Gentlemen, I ask for your assistance in identifing some mystery "Boxes" that are popping up in my neighborhood. I can offer you the following, and there are also pictures: There are 2 slightly different models, they vary in where the vent is located. All boxes have 3 connections: Power, antenna, and some sort of other connection - phone, or perhaps fiber. No one asked the city communications department or the city attorney for permission to install these. They also would like to know what they are. All have a fan inside that is running. The devices were manufactured or owned by Nextel. (See pics.) The antenna looks to be 800 Mhz. Here are the pics: www.picasaweb.google.com/terrryindtw/What_is_it |

Well, I have been told the tennis racket shaped can serve as a turning
web, and in CATV systems it sort of a "slack eliminator" because solid core cable expands and contracts differently. I also think that the boxes are too close together in some parts of the city to be mini cells, although I must admit that is what I thought they are at first. The scary thing is that the antennas in some locations are extremely close to 13,000 volt lines. Oh, and I mentioned the communications department and the city attorney because I just happen to know them both. Thanks for your time, Stuff like this just piques my curiosity. |
