Hot 97.7 Says Goodbye to San Jose

Shortly after midnight, August 7th, KHQT, also known as Hot 97.7,
signed off the air after over seven years of successfully serving the
San Jose area. This move was in preparation for the simulcast of San
Francisco-based KFOG 104.5. Recently, Susquehanna Broadcasting,
owners of KFOG, purchased KHQT for $8.2 million.

Hot 97.7 listeners gathered in KHQT's parking lot on the morning of
August 6th to give thanks and support to the KHQT staff. Many
listeners also phoned in to express their regrets and wish the staff
well. Several former KHQT staff members returned to participate in
the sendoff.

Hot 97.7 began broadcasting the Dance/CHR format in February 1988 from
a warehouse in Mountain View. Their popularity grew quickly in the
San Jose area, until they became known as "San Jose's Hot 97.7." They
provided many services to the San Jose area, including several
community outreach and radio internship programs.

Hot 97.7 DJs Lisa Fox, Jerry Hart, and Greg Lopez will be moving on to
KMEL 106.1. Other staff members are pursuing positions with KMEL and
other SF Bay Area stations. Several weeks ago, Elvis and JV, Hot
97.7's "Morning Doghouse", left Hot 97.7 to do the morning drive at
"Wild 107" KYLD 107.7, which is also simulcast on KYLZ 99.1.

PD Bob Perry gave a heartfelt speech to the staff and listeners during
the last few minutes of the broadcast. In his words, "what's going on
here ... is about people, people who have given their lives ... in order
to help and entertain the people in San Jose."

Hot 97.7 closed its broadcast with Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard to Say
Goodbye to Yesterday."

I was part of the original air staff...in Mountain View then San Jose. I was wondering if the old warehouse is near the location of Google? Worked under Steve Smith...Great station! ~Susan Wise
