Hi,
I've been following the thread and I missed what it is you are trying to accomplish. If what you want to do is put a blip on an APRS map and thats all then I suggest getting the TinyTrakIII. http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/. It is simple to build, costs 40.00 bucks and interfaces with any KPC product cable 16.00 http://www.packetradio.com/!TNCables/KV2RSRJ45.jpg http://www.packetradio.com/%21TNCables/KV2RSRJ45.jpg (this one is for the htx-212) you may already have a cable for the KPC that you own. Buy an old rig, conect the tinytrack to the radio cable, connect the GPS (used ETREX cheap) to the other end of the TinyTrack (standard GPS to DB9 Serial connection) and turn it on. You are now putting an APRS signal out on 144.390 simplex, No PL. I can now see you from my home in NJ. If you want the GPS to work in the city or in a heavily wooded or Valley area then you will need a GPS that has an external antenna connector on it. Garmin GPSMAP 76 or Garmin 12XL. If you are getting a GPS anyway I would suggest you bite the bullet and get the GPSMAP 76. Now you can see where you are in the world on a selfcontained map on the GPS. No wires hanging around to a PDA. If what you want to do is more than that then spend the bucks and get the Kenwood TM D700. That simple! Any other way you do it will put more wires in your car than any wife will allow and my wife is a Ham. N2TVM Have Fun Please call if you need help. just drop me an email and ill send you the no.
