Default How to disable CW sidetone in TS-440s?

Hello all,

I've googled this and found nothing. I want to disable the
CW sidetone, or at least turn it all the way down on my
Kenwood TS-440. I use the sidetone in my keyer instead,
and the two clash!

Anyone know if this can be done without hacking anything
up? Like a DIP-switch or similar? Or a hidden volume pot?

Thanks

Look for VR9 in the service manual to turn down the side tone output.

Its the only way that I can see to accomplish what you want.

Thanks for the info - right after I posted it, I found that myself as well.
That
indeed will do the trick - now to find pot VR9 on the IF board.... hopefully
it isn't too well hidden (why didn't they bring a Sidetone volume out to the
front or rear panel? I can't be the only one who doesn't like the sound of
the Kenwood sidetone!)

Might be better to turn down the sidetone in the keyer. If you were to ever
use a straight key, you would need to turn the radio side tone back up.

Do a search for a tech manual, and look for cw side tone adjustment..
The tech manual shows how, and location of pot...
There are several on google that I found!

Good thought. But actually I normally monitor my CW on my R5000
receiver that sits next to the TS-440. But I will give that some thought.
Thanks for pointing it out...

How about improving the 440 by a simple mod. Find the value of the inside pot,
remove it, run some wires to a convenient spot and install an outside pot/knob
like it should have had in the first place. You're not one of those guys who
doesn't like to drill holes are you...

experience - "professional driver on closed course"). THAT is what I shall
do!!
