Wonder if there are any other Hams that have managed to take their rigs on a
Boy Scout campout and got the Scouts interested in Ham Radio, or even Morse
Code ? We have two Hams in our Troop, and we have thought about doing the
JOTA in October, along with dragging a rig to our indoor/cabin camping
weekends, and something during good weather. Also, what would be a good rig
to drag out to these camping events....

Cabin camping during the winter months is a great time bring along the rig.
Started with an FT-990AC and then traded for an FT-100D with a switching
power supply. That fit under the car seats easily. Bringing a Kenwood
TS-480SAT this weekend with an MFJ long wire tuner and switching supply.
Antenna is about 30-40 ft of wire thrown over a tree branch. Many of the
boys really enjoy the radio time.

I really like the idea of small size, along with some 2m capability

What are the general comments about these rigs, and prices

I have the Kenwood TS-440S and Icom IC-735 and like them both. I
bought the Icom first and, probably for that reason, like it a little
better. I had a Yaesu before them and liked it, too. I have a small 10
meter rig and a converted CB 10 meter rig I take to Alabama some
times. I have a Yaesu 2 meter and an Icom handheld 2 meter.

I used the Icom at home and the Kenwood in the car.when I had a
passenger car vice an SUV.

A decade or two ago Hams from Western KY took their rigs to Council
campouts on a regular basis. I have no records of how many actually
got their license.

Some years ago Scouts troops in the vicinity were invited to view and
participate in the Annual ARRL Field Day.

I never saw the outing tutn out to be a flop. But it might help to
have a demonstraton or two to peak their interest.

Works a lot better if you pre-arrange to have someone at the other end
to talk with.

Maybe you could set up with another troop doing the same thing, kind
of a mini JOTA.
