Note to Kenwood: Please bring back the TS-850s
I knew I read this review somewhere but I did not find it until after I posted the previous message. Here it is... ===================================== From http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/4?page=5 AA8VL Rating: 5/5 Dec 5, 2002 11:07 SIMPLY THE BEST DARN RIG--THE AUDIO REVOLUTION Time owned: more than 12 months First off, I have used many of the high end radios out there. I thought the best rig for me was the Kenwood TS-2000...so I bought it! Bought a TS-850S/DSP-100 for backup and WOW! Sold the TS-2000 and bought another TS-850/DSP-100. The audio on transmit and recieve is AWESOME! Just stock out of the box without the optional DSP-100. With the DSP-100 the Kenwood TS-850 is simply an unmatched rig for the competition. I have never yet seen a rig in the price range of this one that is able to produce such sweet TX / RX audio! If you buy a TS-850S be on the lookout for a DSP-100. You will not regret it. I will never sell my TWIN 850's! PERIOD! It's love baby! On CW, the radios are not even close in weak signal reception. The TS-850 is clearly better. I use the TS-2000 on 6 meters and it's OK. Deaf on 2 Meters without an external preamp. When I read these reviews, it makes me wonder whether you have the same radio. I use a high end transverter and TS 950SDX on 2 Meters and the TS-2000 is so far below this rig that I took the it off line. I was really dissapointed! I'll keep it here in case the next satellite actually works. Otherwise, it's going to stay on the shelf where it belongs. This is a really average radio that is below 4 but I feel kind tonight. --------------------------------------------------------------- # 3 http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1249?page=2 N7BUI Rating: 3/5 Oct 23, 2005 16:06 OK rig, but probably won't keep it. Time owned: 3 to 6 months As much as I'd like to continue the drum beat of how wonderful this rig is I just can't. I have enjoyed its HF ham band SSB/CW operation but on AM reception this thing is the pits. Some will probably think that this is a minor point. But if you use your radio mostly for general SW reception like I do you would understand. While tuning the SW AM bands this rig has an annoying "pop pop" noise as you turn the knob through stations (AGC?). Opening the DSP wider helps, but then you have to put up with hetrodynes every 10Khz. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium of DSP/AGC/RF gain. Tighten the DSP and the "pop pop" is worse and fidelity is garbage. My Yaesu FT-857D is a much better receiver for SW. That combined with the very strong birdie on UHF, this thing might be going out the door. I don't think I should have sold my FT-847! On its plus side, the dual receiver feature is great, the SSB operation is excellent, and on UHF/VHF FM it works great. I have used the “Sky Command” with my Th-D7 and it is a neat feature. But don’t let all the bells and whistles blind you to some of the issues this radio has. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ # 4 Long http link. You'll proaby have to copy and paste it back together. http://groups.google.com/group/uk.ra...921a3d8e1c8e5c On Tuesday 11 Jan 2005 21:48, the whim of a few quarks and leptons to be Starr for a while caused the following to be typed: Your not the only one. A friend of mine just flogged of his ts2000 and expensive yaesu radio in a box in favour of all valve gear including a 902 for HF. Yes and I bet he's having more fun with that FT-902 that he ever did with the worst radio Kenwood ever produced. The TS-2000 was a mistake. There a 3 former owners I know that would agree with you. That's not to detract from the 902, but having been on the receiving end of a few 2000s, it is my opinion that Kenwood let themselves down badly, especially given the quality of their "lower end" set, the TS-570, both the S and the DG. Yes I heard the 2000 is quite deaf and the voice compression sucks among other things. Perhaps Kenwood should have concentrated on the functionality of the radio rather than the whistles and bells ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are other comparisons if you search the net. -Justin ================================================= = On Sun, 11 Jun 2006 20:47:53 GMT, "Dan" wrote: That list is only a ranking of narrow spaced dynamic range and doesn't take into account the many other things that make a radio great. That's wonderful engineering data, but is very limited. That's why user reviews such as one finds on e-ham and other places are valuable. Obviously they're subjective. But they take into account real-world, everyday user impressions of a rig which includes a wide variety operating styles and tastes. How, for example, can I cross band repeat, or run six meter e-skip openings on a TS 850? I do that all the time on my current rig. And still get outstanding performance when running HF (without the need for optional "affordable" extra filters) See my point? If we only went by spec rankings, we'd all be running Orions, I guess. "Steven L Umbach" wrote in message ... Ehams reviews are very subjective and the rating of the radios should not really be compared on their score scale. By that measure the Icom 736 is a better rig than the Icom 7800 or Ten Tec Orion. It is best looked at as a measure of user satisfaction with that particular rig to the users expectations for the money. I have a Kenwood TS 850 and a TS 2000 and the TS 850 absolutely blows away the TS 2000 in receiver performance. The link below shows Sherwood Engineering rankings on many rigs based on close in dynamic range performance. Note how high the TS 850 is in the list with affordable Inrad filters installed [not roofing filter]. Almost all the radios above it are ham band only rigs and the IC 765 has the narrow roofing filter in it I believe. Interesting is how great a performer the TS 830 is shown to be. --- Steve http://www.sherweng.com/table.html "Dan" wrote in message news:68nig.84$db5.44@trnddc03... I don't know where you are getting your reviews, but on e-ham, the TS 2000 is the second most reviewed HF transceiver with 279 reviews and an average rating of 4.6 out of 5.0. (the Icom 706, all flavors, has the most at 334 reviews.) The TS 850 has 79 reviews with an average of 4.7 out of 5.0. Not much difference and a much smaller population in the data set. I'd say the 2000 is holding it's own as far as user reviews go. Oh yeah...Justin Case of WHAT?? "Justin Case" wrote in message ... Dear Kenwood, I've been reading all the reviews on your current ham radios, and one thing repeatedly comes up in the reviews. The Kenwood TS-450s is reported to be better than the Kenwood TS-570x, and the Kenwood TS-850s is reported to be better than the TS-2000. As a matter of fact many of the reviews have said the TS-2000 is down right deaf when compared to a Kenwood TS-850s, TS-870s, ICOM 746 Pro, and Yaesu Mark V. I looked at the Icom radios, but I thought they were ugly. The Yaesu radios have too many reported trips back to Yaesu repair, the Ten Tec Orion II is too expensive, so that leaves Kenwood. I can buy used, but it would be nice to have a new TS-850s. I've got the cash, the desire, and the will to spend, but you currently don't offer the radio to get my dollars. Sincerely, A U.S. Ham. |
