Default Recommended Method for PCB mounting of Toroidal Coils

Hi..
In the past, I've always mounted my coils vertically but
this time around, I need to mount some horizontally. I was
simply going to glue them to the pcb but wanted first to get
input as to other home brewer's method of mounting toroids to
a pcb. The toroids will be FT-37-43 type wide band transformers
in the 10MHz range. Your input is welcome. Take care.

Hi Jim, I guess the first thing I would consider is differences with
the leads getting to pads. Horizontal is more stable than vertical,
but takes up more space. I guess the big factor would be the space
requirement. I would never mount one vertical if there were space for
horizontal. That determination would be dependent on the layout of
your circuit board. Good luck.

Yeah. A touch of silicon adhesive or hot melt seems obvious. Can't think
what more is needed unless you find something that seems to not be
working as expected.

Place a thick plastic washer between the toroid and the board to reduce
stray magnetic and capacitive coupling between coil and metallic surface.
Toroid coils are not completely devoid of coupling to nearby external
objects and surfaces.

I've always mounted smaller toroids (1" OD with copper) vertically. For larger
ones, either a pair of cable ties of some neutral cure silicone adhesive works
for me.

I checked this out and I LIKE it.. This is the
way that I am going to do it for now on..
Thanks.

Hmm... that doesn't really seem that much easier than just using a glue gun in
the first place, is it?

Personally I'd also worry about detuning due to having the coil sitting right
on top of the ground plane like that, but I suppose that if he's manually
aligning everything anyway it doesn't really matter.

With FT-37-43 toroidal cores, the outer diameter of the form
is 3/8 inch, right?

There should be very little change in inductance by simply
gluing that small an inductor to a non-conductive spacer
at least 1/8 inch thick...such as most any plastic material.
I've used two-part epoxy from the hardware store, a silicone
RTV goopy stuff (from same store), even my wife's glue
gun for craft work (lots of TLC involved in such persuasion),
all worked well. I'd judge that the two-part epoxy would be
the most long-lasting on fiberglass-epoxy substrate boards.
