Are you sure it's a rheostat? Could it be a variable inductor?

looking closer, it looks like a slider on the coil. Majestic used a
moving copper cup to tune their antenna coil in the Model 90
TRF. I was thinking along the same lines. I'd think that arrangement
would wear out or become noisy long before a variable reluctance
system.
