Saving the VOA English Service
I contacted the Voice of America and asked if the English service was scheduled to be shut down. I received this reply: "Thank you for your note about VOA English. In fact, the President's budget proposal 2007 does call for the elimination of 14 hours a day of VOA News Now, which is the Voice of America's daily broadcast offering of English language news and features. That remains a proposal, and of course the whole budget proposal is moving through Congress, where the House has restored all of the English programming proposed to be cut. The outcome of all of this is not known at this time, so I would suggest that you stay tuned." The House of Representatives appropriations bill would save VOA's English service. The Senate bill has no provision tho. It has to go to conference to be hammered out. So there is still a chance the VOA English service could be saved. English to Africa and Special English are not to be cut by the way. If you think the VOA English service should be saved it is strongly recommended you contact your two Senators. You can go to http://www.senate.gov/ Up in the top right hand corner is a drop down menu where you can find your two U.S. Senators. Send them an e-mail asking them to keep the English service going. You might want to mention that anti-Americanism seems to be on the rise, along with terrorism. So broadcasting 24/7 every day from satellite, internet, AM, FM, and shortwave in the home language of the target country and in English can only help promote peace and understanding. |

Saving the VOA English Service - Doh !
VF,
Since VOA English Language Programming is not met to be received and heard by Americans in the USA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VOA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith-Mundt_Act Then "Why" would your Senators and Congresspersons care if you could hear any VOA Broadcasts at all ? ? ? If the 'goal' of the VOA is to reach the Non-American {Non-English} Speaking Peoples of the World with the "American View" of World News and Information. Then VOA should be Broadcasting Around the World in every Language except American {English} - Talking to People in their Native Language - In Words that they can readily understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...casting_Bureau voa english - it boggles the mind ~ RHF |

You broadcast in the home language and English because English is the most popular international language. |
