First ARRL Online Auction Planned for October

w7get writes "The ARRL may be giving eBay and the other auction sites a
little competition in the Amateur Radio arena this fall when the first ARRL
Online Auction gets under way. Auction proceeds will help to support the
League's educational services and programs. The event now is in the planning
stages, says ARRL Business Services Manager Deb Jahnke, K1DAJ."

That's our ARRL. Once again they have positioned themselves to lead
the amateur radio hobby as it charges forward toward new technology.
Someone might want to clue the ARRL in that Ebay has been operating as
an auction business for about a decade, they went public about 5 years
ago after they dominated the market, and that Ebay most likely does not
even realize the AARL is even holding the auction.

I for one applaud the effort, with the hopes that they will police it
sufficiently to disallow the RadioMarts of the world to make incorrect
claims . . .

It's more than a little presumptuous for the ARRL to claim their
auction will be competitive with Ebay auctions in any measurable way.
But maybe the statement is tongue-in-cheek. Indeed because this is an
ARRL fund raiser they will be peddling donated items and it does not
appear that individual members will be selling directly. Given the
quality of equipment one sees for sale at most radio club sales, I
doubt that the ARRL will do much policing or vetting of merchandise.
My guess is ARRL will severely limit participation by requiring buyers
to be ARRL members.

Ah well, if your assumption is correct that they will severely limit buyers
to members, then really, why bother? Do they not offer an advertising
service now to members?

This auction is a fundraiser for ARRL. My guess is that equipment will
be donated by members and possibly from a manufacturer or two. Maybe
the ARRL has a closet of old equipment that could be auctioned too. I
would be very surprised if they opened the auction up to the general
(non-ARRL) public.
