Those of us who have been involved with HD since its earliest developmental days feel that the project is going ahead faster than expected. The significant FMs in the top 100 markets, with few exceptions, are all on with HD or are committed with contracts signed. There are already several hundred "first step" HD-2 channels going, and more and more receivers are appearing, some getting close to the critical price points for mass sales. As I have said, AM HD may be a different issue (although the truly significant stations are on in the major markets) but that is a problem with the health and future viability of the AM band, not with HD itself. Keep in mind that much new technology is expensive in its early phases... my first VCR cost over $800, while my first CD player cost $1,400. I can now get a VHS (were I to want one) for around $30 and a portable CD player was spotted at retail last week for under $15. |
