Default Indoor Antenna

I live in a condo and have a "no outdoor antenna" rule. Other problem
is the is no attic access (except for a few wall access panels.

Are the any respectable indoor antennas?

Yes. Take a look at the loop antennas made by Wellbrook. In
particular, the LA 5030 Indoor Loop Antenna.

Not compared to an outdoor antenna there aren't! I was in your position
once. I used some very stealth solid, coated 28 or lighter gauge magnet
wire to run a random wire antenna out to a tree. It was virtually
invisible to the naked eye unless you REALLY looked for it. That will work
much better for you than ANY indoor antenna if you can manage to get it up
unseen at about 3 AM ;-)

Default Indoor Antenna

I have had ham radio contacts with folks in your predicament who were using
an
electric blanket hung on an outside wall as an antenna! Not the best, but
it will work!

Terry M. [K8TJM],

The In-Door Shortwave Listener (SWL) Antenna
-with- An Out-Side Antenna Element

Consider these Two MFJ Shortwave Listening (SWL) Antenna
Pre-Selectors {Tuners?} Plus (+) "Mini-Size" Shortwave Listener
(SWL) Antennas and the Coax Cable "Snake" [Hidden] Antenna

The MFJ-1020C Shortwave Listener (SWL) Active {Pre-Amplified}
Indoor Antenna actually covers the LW - MW - SW Bands from
300 kHz to 40 MHz
http://www.mfjenterprises.com/produc...odid=MFJ-1020C
The MFJ-1020 is quit helpful as a Pre-Selector for AM/MW
Broadcast Band Listening with an External Antenna besides
using it with the Shortwave Bands.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/sw_ant/1413.html
TIP - Use the MFJ-1020 it with a shorter smaller out-side
Antenna for a cleaner Signal along with the Pre-Amplifier
to boost the Signal as needed.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...t/1413rear.jpg
AM/MW DXING - For general all-a-round AM/MW DXing
a CB (10m) Whip Antenna mounted on a piece of Top-Rail
with a Coax Cable feed-in-line works pretty good with the
MFJ-1020 Active {indoor} Antenna used as an Active
"Out-Side" Antenna Pre-Selector.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...nt/1413lrg.jpg
FWIW - As a general Pre-Selector I recommend the
MFJ-1020 over the other two listed in this message for
it's greater coverage and overall utility as both an InDoor
Active Antenna; OutSide External Antenna Pre-Selector
and shorter-smaller External Antenna Pre-Amplifier.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../1413spec.html

The MFJ-1045C Shortwave Receiver Pre-Selector covers
'only' the Shortwave Bands from 1.8 MHz to 54 MHz
http://www.mfjenterprises.com/produc...odid=MFJ-1045C
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../mfj-1045c.jpg
Note - The MFJ-1045 does not cover the LW and AM/MW
Bands from 300 kHz to 1.7 MHz.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...amps/0807.html
TIP - The MFJ-1045 can also be used with a shorter smaller
Out-Side Antenna for a cleaner Signal {less indoor noise}
along with the Pre-Amplifier to boost the Signal as needed.

IMHO - Both the MFJ-1020 and MFJ-1045 and other Active
{Amplified} Pre-Selectors can be used very effectively with
"Mini-Size" Shortwave Listener (SWL) Antennas when the
SWL has a limited space for, or restrictions on the location
and placement of their Antenna.

ABOUT - "MINI-SIZE" SWL ANTENNAS :
"Mini-Size" Shortwave Listener (SWL) Antennas
that are under 16 Feet
* Short Vertical Wire or CB (10m) Whip Antennas
* Short Horizontal Wire Antenna
* Small Inverted "L" Antenna [5-7 Ft Up and 8-10 Ft Out]
* Small End-Fed Inverted "V" {Bent} Antennas
[ Apex of the "V" about 1/3 the Length of Wire ]
* Small Off-Center-Fed 'Mini' Windom Antenna
[ 6 Ft Short-Arm and 10 Ft Long-Arm ]
NOTE -These "Mini-Size" Antennas can be either OutSide
in the open air; Under-the-Eaves; or In-the-Attic.
ADD - A Grounding Point {Ground Rod}
PLUS - A Matching Transformer

http://www.mfjenterprises.com/produc...odid=MFJ-1020C
The MFJ-1020 is quit helpful as a Pre-Selector for AM/MW
Broadcast Band Listening with an External Antenna besides
using it with the Shortwave Bands.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/sw_ant/1413.html
TIP - Use the MFJ-1020 it with a shorter smaller out-side
Antenna for a cleaner Signal along with the Pre-Amplifier
to boost the Signal as needed.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...t/1413rear.jpg
AM/MW DXING - For general all-a-round AM/MW DXing
a CB (10m) Whip Antenna mounted on a piece of Top-Rail
with a Coax Cable feed-in-line works pretty good with the
MFJ-1020 Active {indoor} Antenna used as an Active
"Out-Side" Antenna Pre-Selector.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...nt/1413lrg.jpg
FWIW - As a general Pre-Selector I recommend the
MFJ-1020 over the other two listed in this message for
it's greater coverage and overall utility as both an InDoor
Active Antenna; OutSide External Antenna Pre-Selector
and shorter-smaller External Antenna Pre-Amplifier.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../1413spec.html

The MFJ-1045C Shortwave Receiver Pre-Selector covers
'only' the Shortwave Bands from 1.8 MHz to 54 MHz
http://www.mfjenterprises.com/produc...odid=MFJ-1045C
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../mfj-1045c.jpg
Note - The MFJ-1045 does not cover the LW and AM/MW
Bands from 300 kHz to 1.7 MHz.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...amps/0807.html
TIP - The MFJ-1045 can also be used with a shorter smaller
Out-Side Antenna for a cleaner Signal {less indoor noise}
along with the Pre-Amplifier to boost the Signal as needed.

IMHO - Both the MFJ-1020 and MFJ-1045 and other Active
{Amplified} Pre-Selectors can be used very effectively with
"Mini-Size" Shortwave Listener (SWL) Antennas when the
SWL has a limited space for, or restrictions on the location
and placement of their Antenna.

ABOUT - "MINI-SIZE" SWL ANTENNAS :
"Mini-Size" Shortwave Listener (SWL) Antennas
that are under 16 Feet

I never thought an indoor antenna could compare to outdoor. But,
seems others here are having good luck with indoor setups. I would
suggest maybe hide the north country or similar short vertical with a
preamp in a convienent location - like a tree - and pipe some coax
into the house. If you can stick a small birdhouse on a pipe then you
can put a pa0rdt in the birdhouse and run coax down pipe,
underground, and into condo.

If your neighbors get tweaked with this setup then just send me their
address and phone numbers and I'll threaten them with bodily harm no
problem. If they continue with this anti radio crusade then I'll stop
by and crack their heads open with a hammer. Fair enough?

kind regards,
