Rumors abound at Cal Tech that the Big One is nigh. They are telling
people to prepare.

They at CalTech being whom? The geologists or the frat boys?

Sounds like some more hyperbole from the purveyors of panic.
You know, those opportunists that want to sell a load of 'survival' gear
to the gullible masses.
Back before the Y2K non-event it was ten thousand rounds of ammunition
and six hundred pounds of rice, then during Dubya's phoney ramp up to the
Halliburton KBR rip off scam it was Visqueen and duct tape,
and it seems like there has always been some overnight C2C guest 'expert'
mouthing off between Sangean and C. Crane commercials.
I actually live close enough to all the latest SoCal/Mexican seismic instability
to feel the temblors and daily shaking and I'm certainly not worried about any
'big one'. However if dolts like Cuhu want to sign over their disability check,
that one from the government he constantly bashes, I'd be glad to spend it. ;-)

To be honest, California is obviously a sitting duck for big quakes -
but unless I hear that some reliable scientists are using the data in
a statitistically meaningful way to reach the conclusion that our
quake risk has heightened, then prounouncements of this type are just
for laughs and nothing more.

By the way, didn't you hear? The Aztecs say the world ends in two
years :-)

Actually, that's the Mayans.

And the reason the calendar ends in 2012 is because they ran out
of room on the rock.

I don't think CalTech has much of a Greek scene. None that I've heard of.

So why are they keeping it secret? Who at CalTech sells MRIs?

That's the Mayans. I say 2 years is optimistic.
