Hi, RHF, I think you're right usually regarding the 70% of retail as a
maximum guideline for eBay bidding, but there are exceptions when an item is not readily available although purportedly still in production. In late July I paid about $120 on eBay for a Sony AN-LP1 (retail ~$85 if you can find one). I notice that there's another one on eBay right now which has already bid up past that with another day and a half left in the bidding (up to $122.50 as I write this). Here's a link to that exciting auction, LOL: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3044664623 Anyway, I agree with your guideline 99% of the time, and of course I realize that some may think me foolish to pay that 50% penalty, but I really wanted the item. Put differently, maybe I had more money than sense. :-) Still, I enjoy the AN-LP1 very much when traveling. Randy (RHF) wrote in message om... = = = "Uncle Jizzie" = = = wrote in message ... There are many people that live in parts of the world where common products by western standards are hard get, so they shop for them on Ebay. Having said that, I still think there's a lot of 'shill bidding' taking place on Ebay. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

While there is no shortage of detractors on this and other newsgroups
regarding EBay, I have had generally excellent "luck" with buying through that site on about a dozen items ranging from ham radio, to model railroad stuff, FM radio broadcast equipment, to radio controlled model airplane equipment. Only once have I been less than satisfied, and that was due to the seller sending the item in a poorly packed box with newspaper as the packing material and a few items inside the equipment case came loose and rattled around. About 5 minutes with a screwdriver completely fixed the problem luckily enough. If you know what you want, and set a personal maximum for price, then tightly slam the wallet closed when that limit is reached, I don't see the problem with the selling prices obtained on EBay. Frankly, if I were selling something, I'd look to get as much as the general traffic will bear. Heaven forbid that I should meet an untimely death, but if my "prized toys" were being sold off so my wife could pay bills, I would hope that the executor of my estate would be out to maximize the cash return for her to the greatest extent possible. If you get caught up in some kind of uncontrollable bidding frenzy because of the "fun" you're having, or don't have a clue as to the proper value of an item, then you have other problems on the go. The very existance of EBay isn't the cause of it. Lee |
