I remember December 9th - the day MNDOT didn't plow. I live at 35W next to the Burnsville Center, and was driving all the way to 494 at Bass Lake Road in Maple Grove. It took me 3 hours to get TO work, and 3 hours to get home. What a day! | I actually like winter most of the time. | Stargazing and DXing are better in the winter by far, and I love X-country | skiing and snowshoeing along the St. Croix river valley and along the north | shore of Lake Superior. Let's not forget the *superb* fishing. On Friday, I'm off for 3 days of fishing on Lake Pepin. The walleyes have spawned (hopefully), and will be moving in to the shallows. If luck is on my side, we'll have some tasty fillets in the deep freeze (minus a couple kept fresh for lunch on Sunday). Season's already open there. Aren't I one of the sneakiest sunzabitches you've ever seen? (Big, Evil Grin) Oh, yeah, I'm taking the old FRG-7 along, with 100 feet of wire, and a big bunch of "D" sized batteries. How long do you get on a set of batteries? I've never tried them in that radio. I've been thinking of getting a 12v gel-cell like used in emergency lighting for powering the set. They don't spill like regular lead acid batteries. |

You can get a sealed lead-acid 12V battery that are made for portable depth finders, comes with charger too and usually only $20. A bit smaller than a motorcycle batter. |

I've thought of doing just that, but I've been 'spearmintin' with NiMH D cells, and they seem to last forever. Plus, they fit inside the receiver, so that saves the space that would be taken by another piece of kit. However, when I start taking QRP to the field, I think I'm going to have to do just that. 73, Steve Lawrence KAØPMD Burnsville, Minnesota (NOTE: My email address has only one "dot." I've gotten a good week's use, with about 12 hours a day and headphones. Turning on the dial lights really seems to suck the current out. It's interesting- when I go on these little DXPeditions, I find I don't have to crank up the AF gain to drown out TV RFI and powerline / Fluorescent hash, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with the batter life. 73, Steve Lawrence KAØPMD Burnsville, Minnesota (NOTE: My email address has only one "dot." I'm hoping I can get KTNN-660 in the log one more time before Summer gets here. Last time I heard the station was in January, parked in front of work at about 6:45 a.m., well before sunup. 73, Steve Lawrence KAØPMD Burnsville, Minnesota (NOTE: My email address has only one "dot."
